Title: mk3 golf gti gearbox will other boxes fit?

need some help please fellas. my trusty old mk3 8v gearbox has just decided to give up on me. making nasty noises and losing 3rd gear. in local scrap yards these are proving very difficult to find so i wondered if a gearbox from a different spec golf would fit. maybe something like a 2l driver or gl. or even if a passat box would fit in it. i only use it as a spare car so if it didn't have the same ratios performance wise, this wouldn't be so much of a problem.
