Hi does anyone know the wheel fitment for mk1 golf convertable?

Iirc they are 4x100 pcd et35 but someone with a mk1 would be best confirming it. :)

centre bore is 57.1 which is very important to get right. Larger is ok as you can get spiggot rings to make them fit properly, but smaller isn't any good cos they wont fit on obviously :grin:

PCD is indeed 4x100, and std offset is et35-38.  Lower numbers mean the wheel sits further into the arch, ET24 wheels with a 40mm drop is about as far as you can go without modifying the arches, or going for lower profile tyres :)

would 17's go on, or would i be better going for 15, 16's & lowering a little?

15's and drop it.

17's will give you a VERY harsh ride. I have got 15's and its just about OK. Plus 17's will slow the car down alot. I noticed a big difference after going from 13's to 15's.
