Title: reversing lights??
Post by: cняis on 17 September 2006, 02:06
Hi,

Just got home from a 200 mile round trip only to notice both my reversing lights not working . im assuming its not bulbs as they have both failed (although i will check in the morning!)

is there anything that may be causing the problem? perhaps a faulty sensor/switch on the gearbox/gearstick?

chris

It's not as uncommon as you think for both blubs to blow, after all they're new bulbs put in at the factory and they tend to blow very close together if not at the same time.
Check the fuse as well, but other than that the reversing light switch is the next common thing to go. I'm assuming of course all the other lights in the rear cluster work?

yes they all work except reversing lights. i'll chec kthe bulbs/fuses in a mo, but any ideas on where the reverse switch is?

its probably the reversing light switch. i've had to re-new mine twice. its ontop of the gear box, with two wires with rubber boots coming out the top. only cost a few quid.

short the wires to the reverse light switch with a piece of wire, then put it in reverse with the ign on.  If the lights work then the switch needs replacing, if not the fault lies elsewhere :)

i have the same problem on my 020 box..

got a quote from VAG on the switch.....£36...ouch..not paying that..
gonna go looking for one at scrappy or elsewhere, if not i will just connect the light to an unused switch, at least then i can see...might give some people a scare...

also checked it isnt part of the MOT, so that is good..!

sounds to me like they've quoted you for the large sensor that goes into the side of the gearbox selector mech and also does the mpg gauge & shift light, rather than the wee 2 pin one that simply screws into the top.

There are also 2 types of 2 pin switches, the earlier ones had spade connectors on and the later type has a proper 2 pin plug.  The earlier ones have been discontinued so if you need one you'll have to get it from GSF or from the scrappy, or chop the 2 pin plug off a later MK2 or MK3 and splice it onto your wiring.
