hello peoples, just had the head off to change the head gasket and stuff. it was apart for a week and we got it together tonight after a hard slog. So... went to start 'er up and nothing happened except the doors locked and then unlocked when i turned the ignition off. battery is charged. all wires everywhere that we can see are plugged in. I never put the alarm in it, (it was in it when i bought the car) so i dont know even what model it is... or what the disarm the disarming code is. i tried the standard recommended by the clifford website, but it didnt work. also the remote central locking isnt working like it used to. any ideas anyone pleeeeeeeeeeease? its been such a long road of work putting it all together, does it all stop here with the damn clifford? I suppose i could call a clifford engineer at 150 pounds an hour..............
-
does it have 'valet' mode on it? if so put that on, disconnect the battery for a short while, try again. cliffords are a nightmare i'm tempted to ditch mine when i do my engine swap.
was the alarm off when you started the head work? what lights come up on the dash when you turn the key?
-
hi thanks for the reply. as you can imagine the frustration is pretty huge. ive tried the 'valet' code which i think is button 1 then 'level' button twice then button one again. but nothing happens. the alarm wasnt on when we started the work. i never turn it on in normal use. i just usually use the key in the door even though i have remote central locking. cliffords are pretty sensetive as im sure you know if you have one?!
on the dash is like a line of lights, i think its 2 red and 2 green. not sure. a bit like if you stall it...
before all of this side indicators used to light up with the remote when the chirp happens, but now there is no chirp and the side indicators dont light up, and the remote central locking doesnt work at all....
disconnect the battery and then connect it again? ok, will try that tomorow. any other ideas tho?
thankyou!!
-
hmmm my indicators don't wrok either at the mo when arming/disarming, but i'm getting it looked at.
to enter valet mode on mine is twice on the level button then button 3.
if all the lights on the dash are on and if you can't hear the fuel pump prime its immobilised. try turning the key then pressing the arm button (either one, the top one does it with noise, the bottom without noises) cliffords have a habit of 'spiking' which seems to reset afetr a while....
-
hi thanks again for your help,
so is it possible that it might reset itself overnight? hmm hope so. i will try your button technique. i dont even know whiich model it is that i have. clifford, yikes... but i have a fob for the dash and a remote with one big blue button tree other little ones on the same face, and then the 'level' one on the side. it looks pretty old cos its quite worn.
im not sure if the petrol pump is priming or not, there is a buzzing noise but i think its coming from the isv....
-
hmmm well leave it overnight, can't do any harm then try to go through it logicly. use my method of going into valet mode and see what happends. it does sound like its spiked, but i don't have a 100% method of fixing it. mine has always fixed itself after a decent drive, which doesn't help as you can't start yours!!
-
nope, and so dont even know if all that work on the head worked. i was so surprised, i was keeping my fingers crossed for a good start up and was a little surprised just to hear the damn doors lock!!
-
ok don't go to clifford, go on their website and they list a load of dealers, they'll be cheaper than £150 for call out. annoying though. if i find anything else out i'll let you know.

Try finding the fuses sounds like it has blown there should be two inline fuses running to the brain, Clifford central locking is usually two relays wired seperatley so that would still work, is the remote a 4 button carbon fibre one or the grey two button one?
I used to be a Clifford enginner so any more questions ask away, does sound like the fuses have gone if not pull both of them for 1 min then put them back in. hth
-
heeeeeellllllp. this is so frustrating. we took out the main cosnsol (i tried all button sequences, standing on my head and rubbing my belly whilst sticking my finger in plug socket etc) and found the alarm behind its a waso expit. we unplugged every wire from it, and the sensor above. and tried to start the car and the same thing happened, just lights on dash and doors locking!!
how can this be, if im sitting there with it in my hand???!!
please help!!!
-
its a grey plastic remote with one bigger blue button and three small grey ones. and a small button on the side. where would these fuses be? didnt see any..
-
It sounds like it has an immobiliser either built into the alarm or a seperate one, some photos might make it a bit easier to figure out :)
-
the fuses should be in little black rubber holders like this and should be in the wires running to the brain. (http://www.cybermarket.co.uk/ishop/images/923/787_418.jpg)
-
hi, we found 2 in line fuses, both a re fine unfortunately. one was on a wire in the engine bay going to the battery, and the other was under the dash under the steering wheel, where we found another clifford black box. we unplugged all the wires to it, and tried to start again. this time the doors didnt lock, but still no starter....
plugged it all back up, and doors lock again.
on the plus side tho, i found an old chocolate sweet and a piece of chewing gum under the gear stick! yuk.
haha if i dont laugh i will cry. i could try to upload some pics if you think that will help.
-
Sounds funny like it's frazzled or lost it's programming, does the LED light up for the alarm? you could try a new battery in the remote fob? Whereabouts are you ?
-
Just re read your first post, have you checked the earths and power connections to the starter as it may not be your alarm thats funked after all? can you hear a click when you turn the key right round?

Righty then..... The Waso box is the culprit by the looks of it the Clifford is alarm only.
I would try cleaning the contacts on the immobliser keyfob to make them shiny a bit of fine sandpaper or a nail board or similar should do it. If not I think you might have to bypass it which is a pain unless you know what your doing.
an auto electrician should be able to do that for you for a lot less than a clifford engineer who wouldn't touch the waso anyway.
If your close I could have a look at it for you.
-
its a long shot but i think the battery on the remote is gone. we took it out and it wont light a torch bulb. and i was thinking that if the car autoimmobilised itself or panic-killed the starter or whatever then if the battery on the remote is gone maybe it explains why it doesnt chirp or the side indicators light up, because i cant tell it not to panic cos ive got the keys?
thankyou monzablue16v. i really wish you were down the road, but im up in the borders of scotland...
do you know how i could get a new battery? it looks very odd. 12 v tiny..
will try sanding the keyfob too. so is the wazo the immobiliser part?not part of clifford? i see.
-
You can get them from any auto shop or halfords, it will be a 12v mini battery in that so give it a go. You should be able to arm it and then disarm it and it will work. The Waso box has nothing to do with the clifford unless someone did something fancy but I doubt it.
-
cheers! im off to halfords right now. fingers crossed...
-
 nope, that didnt work. the new battery didnt make any difference aprt from for a few minutes the side indicators were flashing,, and it didnt try to lock me in when i turned the key, but it still didnt want to start. just nothing. red lights on the dash this time. but then i took the keys out fiddled about a bit and tried again, and its gone back to doors locking and no indicator flash.....
nnnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrg!
-
Time to get the yellow pages out and find an auto elctrician I would say then have you checked the earths and feeds to the starter motor?
-
yes, they were a little corroded but cleaned up ok i think.
i suppose im going to have to pay someone to sort it. Which im really going to resent. i could be throwing even more money at it whilst still not knowing if the car is even fixed engine wise.... see , there was a little problem with one of the cylinder head studs. just on the last half- half turn after torque it stripped the thread in the engine block. its not great i gather, could be disasterous. and its on the back corner. so the stud is in there at the moment at less torque than it should be. the washer was replaced with a thinner one so the stud could grab a hold of a little bit of un-stripped head.
hey, anyone want a golf gti???!! 11 months mot!! no?
ah well, im just going to have to gamble on it being ok, and pay someone to fix it i guess.
-
I had my Clifford 650 sorted out a week and a half ago. Most Cliffords being a pain are down to poor installs. The guy that sorted mine used to run the company that is the distributor over here in the UK (Directed)
I'll forward this thread to him to see if he has an idea for you :)
P.s he can't look at is as he is the opposite end of the country to you.
Edit: I've got a reply back from him:
Can you locate the actual control unit, and post the model of the unit, if no model sticker a serial number will do.
Take a photo of the valet switch and post that if you cant find the unit.
There is a possibility that it is the waso unit at fault, but tbh looking at the absolute abortion under your dash it could actually be anything.
He can help eliminate the alarm from the equation given the info above.
-
thats great, thankyou very much. i will take a pic this afternoon if your guy might beable to identify it. Yesterday with more fiddeling i managed to somehow (dont know how) get the car to not lock the doors when i tried to start 'er up (that joke is wearing a bit thin now...) now red lights come on the dash and the side repeaters occasionaly flash 8times or so. it sounds like the starter is trying to engage. there is a brrrr which i suppose is the petrol pump, a bzzz from the isv i think and a click futt which sounds like its coming from the starter. we changed a connection on an earth strap that looked a bit dodgey but now more head scratching. so now dont know if its still immobilised to some degree by the wacko waso, or if its not going to start anyway cos of starter problems. the battery dosnt seem to be flat. the headlights are still pretty bright. and stereo plays no problem....
-
Ive got an idea which may or may not help. Turn the key so that the fuel pump primes and the isv buzzes. Then run a positive power wire direct from the battery terminal to the ignition terminal on the starter motor. If the motor is fine then it should turn and start the engine.
-
hmmm, now it doesnt go click-futt anymore. thanks for suggestions. all are very welcome. He is out there with his head under the bonnet right now trying to make sure the starter is getting power and working.
better go help....
-
ok, starter is working.
-
WHOOOHOOOO! SUCCESSS!!! he put the starter back on, and i started 'er up, and she started!! so, it musthave been the starter getting stuck somehow after the immobiliser was flukily un-immobilised. But all is not plain sailing although it atleast is on its way. The car started but smoked like crazy from the engine and makes a terrible tappety noise. is this just because the oil hasnt gotten around yet? i ran it for 3 or 4 minutes (revved it through 3000 a few times to reset the ecu) but i turned it off because it was making a racket and smoking. also water pisshing out because the o ring on the side of the cylinder head under the plastic housing (the o-ring i got from vw especially) but it doesnt seem to fit right. anyway thats minor but the tapetty sewing machine noise is more of a concern, and oh ye the smoke...
but im so pleased that it started at all
anyways, i think the other problems are another thread.
THANKYOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP AND IDEAS!!!
-
Cool so you can put all the dash back together! Glad it's working and wasn't the alarm! Time for a my car runs but taps and smokes thread!
-
o nooooooooooooooooooo
i spoke too soon
put the dash back together, went to start it, and the ffffffnnnnnnggggggggggggg thing locked the doors and wont start again!!!!!!!!!!
ive just locked it, because otherwise, im going to go mental and smash it all up. need to breathe.. blblblblblblb
-
just incase anyone was wondering... had to rip all the alarm and immobiliser stuff out. it took alot of head scratching. loads of bits and bobs, wires, relays and boxes, 4 in total! a whole carrier bag full of stuff. anyway, some soldering of wires later, we got it started and it runs well, just a little proper tuning to do. Unfortunately now the back wheel feels like its about to come off. bearing i think. its a never ending story, but i know you all know about that....
Ive had it 2 years, and its really been hard. Ive loved my car, annoyed my boyfriend about it and other mechanically minded people. But now i think.... i may have to give up :embarassed: I know way more about my digifant engine than i think is healthy!
-
dont give up!! if it runs and is all good now (apart from falling off rear wheels) you might as well stick with it!
-
thanks... it means alot
tuned it. wowwww what a difference. it runs maybe better than ever (since ive had it anyway). smooooth! and fast! shame about the back end. turns out its a knackered shock absorber. just had a new spring on it too...
so, keep it going for the winter then eh...?!
we've come so far. its knowing when to stop fixing the endless stream of broken things...
