hi everyone,
my golf (mk4) makes a nocking sound from the front wheels when i go over bumps and uneven ground. ive got the wishbones and ball joints changed and is still there! ive taken it to two independant garages checking all joints and simply cant find out why!
my friend has a gti turbo and has the same problem. he's taken it to VW and had the centre bracket on the exhaust changed, but still same problem. he then took it to an independant garage who said poss noisy shocks.
has any one experienced or have any ideas about this or is this normal?????!! please help :-[

could be a heat shield on the exhaust where the welds have broke.
I would try jacking the front of the car up, put it on jack stands, then put the jack under each wheel and jack that up, don't worry you won't tip the car over as the suspension will take a fair amount of deflection before it runs out of travel and then see if you can see where the noise is coming from.

thanks for the good reply
but the problem is that my dear good mechanic has already done that method. grr. they simply cant point their finger on the exact problem. the problems range from bushes to shocks. have you had to change any parts i.e. shocks?

i've got the same type of car as you and i get a loud thud when i go over speedbumps too fast, i isoclated down to the bumpstops on the suspension.

I have a 99 T plate 1.8T Gti and I get the same sounds going over bumps etc too...I was worried as hell before but not so worried now...maybe it's a common problem, just like the coils and the rear washer wiper and the electric windows >:(
