Title: Wind Noise Through Doors
Post by: chris.carlton on 15 September 2006, 20:02
Has anyone else had a problem with wind noise / wind ingress through the top of the drivers and passenger doors?

There is a whistling of wind on my new GTI and have even taken the stealer out and he says its not right.  He's getting me another GTI to drive on Monday to see if its a build problem or if I'm just being picky!

Its not just road noise or wind hitting the car, but its wind entering and you can hear and feel it.

Hope you can all help me out with comments before i go back to the stealer next week.

Thanks.

CHRIS

This is most definitely a fault.

I'd go with a fault as well, you can hear the wind for sure but no way should you be able to FEEL it. Is it brand new or are you a second owner, I'm thinking possible mild shunt, if it's not brand spanking I'd give it a good going over but it sounds like your man seems to agree with you so with luck you'll get it sorted through them.

It's brand spanking new so we'll see what the stealer comes up with, thanks for comments.

Seems strange that he suggests driving another car when yours obviously can't be right. Can't see what he hopes to achieve. I know of someone who has just taken delivery of a new 5 door and has the same problem. That said he is called Chris .Hope you are not cracking on that this car is yours when really is your girlfriends and you drive a HONDA. COME ON OWN UP.

GARRY.

Yes, still got 17"s but no wind noise, Must have been another from the options list i couldn't afford.

Hope you get it sorted. Was the stealer making good noises.

I took mine back after a couple of months thinking engine was a little noisy and he was

adamant they were all like that but made a note on computer in case it developed

further. Its not good cos it starts to put you on a downer when you should be enjoying

everything thats good about your red ( basic colour) GTI.

Just a thought and forgive me for being Mr obvious but I sometimes get the feeling of a breeze if the air vent on the front drivers side is pointing towards the window and the Aircon, sorry climate whatever, kicks in I know it sounds silly and feel free to tell me to S*d off but have you turned the climate off and see if you still get the feeling of wind??

I know it sounds silly but the climate control kicked in today as I was going along and I could here the wind and then feel it and my mind jumped to this thread.

Oh and I get to "share" mine with my Missus as well, at least she calls it sharing, I call it the weekend as well!!

Hello all, I have heard it has something to do with the space on the wing-mirrors due to the indicators?????(whistle)

some people have been using clear silicon

Well been out in another of the stealer's GTI's and guess what no wind noise/whistling through the door/window!

letter of complaint gone into stealer's service manager seeing as they've had the car in twice now and also sent copy to VW customer services, sales guy actually gave some good advice such as asking for a VW engineer to be present as well as the stealer's mechanic when take it in again!

oh well we'll see what happens.

Ah well, never mind sounds like there might be a bit of a flaw with that wing mirror thing, good luck getting it fixed whatever it maybe.

Happy weekends to you as well!!

Hi there,

I had the same wind noise on my car for about 12 months and it was eventually traced to the drivers door mirror. I believe there is a problem with a gap in the mirror that causes the wind to come in. I had three door seal changes and door alignment checks done by three dealers before Witherspoons in Edinburgh fixed the problem. Please contact me if I can elaborate further.

Yes I have noticed this to, with the climate control is off, when driving I do feel some sort of air on my hand on the steering wheel, never thought much of it.  I knew it was coming from the air vent, and when the engine is heated up you feel a sip of heat also coming through.

Hi Gary & All

although its been with the dealer for a week whilst we were on holiday (free secure garaging!) it is still there and possibly worse!  they are ordering a new seal but given previous comments I'll look into the wing mirror suggestions.

Now have VW onto the garage direct and i will be speaking to them also.

also got cruise control fitted while it was in for a discounted price of £147 and if they think they're being paid before the wind noise is sorted they have another thing coming!

family is well and bump is growing steadily!

Latest update is that after 2 days in the garage and them saying they have replaced a twisted door seal and aligned the door better - yes you guessed it theres still a significant wind noise through the door!!!!

Been onto VW today and am awaiting their come back but am about to quote Section 14 of the Sale of Goods Act to them and try and get a replacement car if they cant fix it.

thanks for advice to date from all and I'll keep you updated with progress.

well it went back in on Thursday morning and came out in the afternoon - ALL FIXED!!!  when i asked what they had done they couldn't answer it as the mechanic who looked at it wasn't there - it seems to me that it could have been an easy fix and they don't want to admit it!!  anyway can now enjoy the GTI without wind rushing in!  although a new rattle has started!! oh well!

the garage have now admitted that the replacement window seal they fitted had been fitted incorrectly & poorly and that all it took to resolve was to get someone who can fit a new seal out of a bag proper!

got some good news today in that the cruise control i had fitted 6 weeks ago, for a discounted price of £147, and that i had not paid for, is no longer to be paid for by me!  VW have agreed to meet the cost due to the problems - just shows that polite but very firm complaining pays off!
