Title: Going to buy a GTi, any advice on which one....?
Post by: Lylos on 12 September 2006, 22:12
Hello everyone I'm new to the forum,

I am just about to purchase a golf at around the 4.5k mark. I have had a look on various websites and by the looks of things the 1.8t seems to be a winner but I was just wondering if some of you could answer a few questions for me.

Are all the 1.8 models turbo's and known as 1.8t's or are there 1.8's and 1.8t's? Is it best to go with a 1.8 or one of the 180bhp models?

sorry for the questions but I'm just a little unsure as to what to go with.

what kevolution said or...

Buiy amk4 1.8 turbo with the most  power they have (not sure of the highest powered?!). And give it a REVO remap and you'll be sorted.

The 1.8 20vTurbo engines are very tuneable.

Hi mate,

The petrol mk 4 GTi comes in a number of different flavours. You have:

A normally aspirated (non-turbo) 2 litre
A normally aspirated (non-turbo) 1.8 litre
and a turbocharged 1.8 litre

I think it's fair to say that the 1.8t is the best of the bunch, with the most power straight out of the box, and is the easiest for tuning to very impressive figures.

This is (seesentially) the same lump that is fitted to the skoda octavia, Audi A3,4 and 6, TT, seat Leon etc etc etc - aporven and reliable lump.

In the golf it came in two variants - 150bhp and 180bhp

@ £4.5k it's most likely that you're going to be looking at a 150bhp model.

These are still exceptionally tuneable, and several hundred quid should see the fat side of 200bhp quite easily.

Mileages are pretty much unimportant on a VW, they tend get better as the miles pile on, but pay attention to service history - look for regular oil changes, check cambelts have been done - ask about MAF and coil pack failures (it's likely to have had them).

Get the current owner to drive first - see how he/she drives the car from cold (always see a turbocharged car from cold). If they give insufficient time for the car to warm up (or cool down afterwards) before giving it the beans then walk away. Turbo engines need careful treatment if you want to maximise their longevity.

Then, when you;ve got yourself one, get in the Mk4 section - give us your engine code and we can advise exactly what you can do tuning wise, and what you can expect powerwise.

Best of luck,

Si

Get the best u can afford at the the time and that offers the best scope for remapping...

checkout revo, Amd technik, Custome code etc to see what power gains etc you can get for the different engines.

Good luck with the purchase :)

dont buy the first one you go to see!! there are 1000's upon 1000's of them out there - shop around look & drive many. you soon start spotting the bad ones from the good ones with ease!

Chaps,

I just want to say thanks for the feedback it's been very useful. I haven't yet made the purchase but when I find the right one I will be sure to let you all know what I've got. From the replies I've decided to test drive ones that I like and then make a decision on how well they drive.

Much appreciated,

Lylos
