Title: Strange sound when I lift off the throttle
Post by: tayles on 11 September 2006, 14:35
I've had my 1998 Golf GTI 1.8T a few weeks and since owning it I've noticed a slight noise every time I lift off the throttle.  It's not a loud dump valve wheeze like you hear on some cars.  I can only describe it as a slight whickering sound.  I've always assumed that this is normal sound for the turbo to make, but I've got to thinking that maybe it's not.  Is this usual?

Sounds like the recirc valve or wastegate, if the car is mapped or has a cold air induction it will be louder

I'd say it's the wastegate.

Are any of these things a problem that need sorting out?

Sounds like the usual recirc valve going, V easy to fix :

I replaced my diverter valve/dump valve/boost valve whatever you like to call it, when I first got my golf  it fluttered since I got it, part cost £21 from VW (parts guy called it a dump valve, didn't know what a diverter valve was)
Took me 5 mins to take the old one off (VW clamps are a bit of a bugger to remove, careful not to damage the hoses)
and took 5 mins to put on the new diverter with new jubilie clamps on.

My car no longer flutters and is completely silent on gear changes, thing is, I kind of liked the flutter, oh well
