Title: Keeping my car!
Post by: Malz0r on 11 September 2006, 10:03
Okay, long story i got really pissed off with my car, even to the point of selling it! anyway fized the problems i had and i just cant let it go i love the mk2 golfs! anyway the point being iv read a few things on here when they have blown engines and things and without giving it a total rebuild what are the best ways to keep it going?

bearing in mind mine is a E reg with 137k on the clock which isnt too bad compared to alot iv seen in the dub projects area?
Iv just checked oil all is good and toppped up water etc had new sparks, dizzy and HD leads done iv got a small oil leak from rocker cover but thats it. Any other ways to keep it going? iv been told to use optimax? only one problem no where near me has it available? so what can i do instead and i also never take the car over 5 revs, well only now and then hardly ever lol.

anything else i could have done that may couse me trouble down the line? any advice would be great thanks in advance!

its a K-Jet GTi btw

dude its a tough choice, but at the end of the day if you chose to own a car which is 20 odd year old you have to expect to pay ( unless you can DIY it) i love my mk1 but just over the last year i must have spent a grand in keeping it on the road but its 25 years old and its been to the moon and back! also when it does go i choose to drive it like a car thats only 3 years old so its bound to get pissed off and break sometimes! but hey........ i love high maintanace girls! lol

If you can't get optimax then make sure you use Super Unleaded. It won't hurt it not using Optimax.

I'd recommend changing the oil every 3-4k miles as that's the one thing that will damage the engine if not changed regularly.

Other than that just make sure you fix stuff if/when it breaks, the longer you leave something the worse it will get and then it will more than likely break something else with it!!

I do try to fix everything ASAP and i think i will change oil soon just for the sake of it lol an about the fuel i normally go to Texico here which only does Unleaded and im pretty sure but not 100% that tesco only does unleaded will have a check just in case but what if i cant, any solutions?

I'd be surprised if Tescos doesn't do it. If you really can't get it anywhere then maybe it would be worth getting the timing set so it runs on normal unleaded rather than super. At least that way it won't cause any damage to the engine.

Try these for the rubber thing - www.gsfcarparts.com

137k seems alright for an E reg to me, there are quite a few newer ones that have done the clock twice!

The rubber thing youre on about is about £5 from the stealers.

Do what I do and point it out on ETKA for them to order it for you

I assume its the same thing as my digifant and if so the little rubber thing on the rocker cover is called a 'PCV' bung. you can get them from GSF for about £2. They seem quite brittle, so I dropped mine into some boiling water to soften it and squeezed it in.
