Title: ISO Problem? What have I done?
Post by: RaKeR on 10 September 2006, 17:03
Hi guys,

I just tried to install my new Blaupunt Essen mp3 player.

The wiring in my Jetta has the standard ISO fittings - brown plug for the speakers and black for the ground, battery live, ignition and one other [which I'm not sure of].

I plugged them both in and the unit wouldn't come to life - I then realised that the live on the exisiting male vw loom does not match up with the live on the female blaupunkt [if you catch my drift?].

It seems that the earth is in the right place, but the live hooked up to the ignition connector on the head unit?  Qustions are thus:

1.  Have I done any damage to the headunit?
2.  Do I need an ISO adapter - if so where from??!??!
3.  Is there a tool that allows me to change the wiring in the ISO plug on the Jetta to match that of the headunit?

Argh.

Si.

Thanks in advance!

Hopefully the radio you fitted has its own fuse so you should'nt have done any damage, check the inline fuses in the wiring then check the fuses in the car.

Okay, so the back of the head unit carries a 10a fuse, so happy about that - there's no inline fuse so to speak.  The point is, is that the live on the male doesn't hook up with the live on the female on the unit - I had a look at the manual - so there's no juice going in there?

You'll probably need a special pin releasing tool.  A friendly ice shop might help, or google it.

No idea's anywhere I've tried!!!  Just getting 'brute force', but I don't want to feck the plug up by yanking 'em out?

Anyone with an y other ideas?!  Or am i just gonna have to cut the wires and re-press new clips and buy a new ISO plug?

if you really don't like cutting wires, a iso/vauxhall adapter should do the trick. Basically the permanent/ignition is the wrong way round. Does the unit come to life with the key in?

No it doesn't fire up at all?

Should it, even if the feeds are the wrong way around then?

Thanks for your reply by the way!

If your trying to wire it up in either a Mk2 Golf or a Jetta, then there isn't an ignition feed live wire.
The brown is earth and the red below is positive but for most modern H/units you also need a swithced live (ignition)which is normally 2 pins away from the live. Vw decided that this was to easy and have actually wired up the permanent live in place of the switched live.

Basically the live you have already is permanent and you then require a switched feed.
Halfords do sell adapter cables if you dont want to bodge your wiring

A bit long winded i know but its easier to show than to explain

I think you need one of these.......Autoleads iso connecter lead Pc2-18-4 most motor shops do these or similar.designed to convert from your original to standard iso connector check the website for more details                http://www.autoleads.co.uk/database/Jetta.html

Hopefully this help's...must also add there ain't a whole lotta room at the back of the sterio cage but a bit of convincing and your radio will clip in ok

Cheers Frog and cheers boneybradley,

Great stuff - I'll see if I can find one in Halfrauds that I can grab right away.  Otherwise I'll order one in!

Outstanding.  I love this forum - it's saved the day once again.

Going by desciption it sounds like the one.....Only thing i have found is on some sterio's the switching and permanant lives can be switched and the auto leads one has pre crimped connectors to sort this...but a couple of bullit's will sort it for you :nerd:

Okay, so I bought the Autolead part - the stereo now orks just fine - except for that when I switch it off, the chuffin' illumination stays on.  AAARRGGGHH!!!

I noticed that there is an illumination lead that goes into the head unit on the iso adapter.  Is this the cause maybe?

Damn thing.
