Hello.
Where abouts is the ecu and how easy is it to fit a chip?

The ecu is under the passenger side wiper (under that plastic stuff below the windscreen and next to the pollen filter) and to be honest i ain't ever heard of anyone fitting a chip successfully especially these cheapo one's from e-bay, unless you can prove me wrong!!!! and if you can/do would you fancy fitting another??? :smiley:

If you want a proper power gain get down to your local rolling road for a set up.....I gained 7bhp and 12Ib/ft of torque and this car has proper service history (and that's at 120'000 miles).....

And I have just thought i have a spare ecu for mine maybe i will buy a chip from e-bay and give one a try (for a mile or two) and see if it does anything..if not I can sell the ecu on ebay "golf gti 8v ecu superchipped extra 10% power!!!!" should find someone!!! :grin:

ECU is easy to remove, but not easy to get the chip out.
The mk3 i had, the chip was soldered in, so better left to the experts.
I was lucky as i knew someone that soldered a socket on the board for me, so i could plug in whatever chip i wanted.

New to the forum so hello all :) Ive been looking into this recently, if you have a pre 94 gti with the infamous Digilag system then the 'cheapo' chips off ebay do actually seem to improve the throttle response as the mk3 overfuels at idle and then leans past 4000rpm.

I have a 96 car which uses the Samos system, unfortunatley apart from adjusting the timing there isnt much a rolling road session can do as the system is self contained, the lambada sensor controlling the air/fuel ratio. The major players in the chipping world (Superchips, blitz, morego etc etc) do specific chips for the later cars but at 300quid a pop i cant see the difference being major.

my car has the ady engine with samos fuel system and I have a before and after graph from the rolling road and there is an extra 7bhp (also had engine codes read and this showed 1 prob but didn't think that would increase power alone) also i must state we did replace the airflow meter and a breather pipe while it was there......still cheaper than taking it to vw for a fault code reading, think i paid about £75 plus part's

Boney, do you mind asking me where you got that done at? Im assuming the gains were made my getting the timing spot on, i know for a fact mine is slightly out:(

Im up north and there arnt many spots around which have a reliable rolling road and are decent with VW's. Wonder if Awesome gti would do it?

message for robmgti.....I used alwyn kershaws near york...they have worked on a few of my car's and i have allways left more then happy.......

and i will reply to this post if i do chip my spare ecu........gotta find time and somebody good at soldering!!!!
