My vr6 has just started squeaking when you turn the wheel either direction, and you can feel a very slight vibration at the same time through the wheel. It does it when it is warmer rather than colder. It's so slight you can't feel it on the move, but only when still or tight, slow manoeuvres. I'm sure it's not the steering belt. I thought it was coming from inside the car (took the wheel off and greased the horn connection and to straighten the wheel), but I now think the sound/vibration seems to be coming from under the bonnet, either inside or around the rubber boot where the steering comes through the bulkhead, but it's hard to tell! could it just be a bearing/seal that needs greasing or could it be something more, like the rack?
Cheers

Why are you so sure its not the belt?
-
Thanks for the reply. Do you mean the large serpentine belt that runs round the water pump, A/C etc, etc? If so it isn't that, I had that replaced not long back and am 99.9% sure it's not making a noise. It's more of a tiny little squeak rather than a belt squeal! Just wondering if the lower steering column bearings are prone to going?
Cheers
-
The Power Steering belt is the leftmost one i think . The serpentine belt is different .
-
VR6 isn't like the 16v, it just has a serpentine belt.
Get someone to turn the steering side to side, listen by the front suspension top mounts, that will probably be your problem.
-
i've got exactly the same problem so let us know if you find out what it is.
-
Try my tip

Sorry this is 'Spankyvr6', I put this in on a mates pc who was already signed in. Oooops
I tried that tonight audi100Quattro, and it sounds like it's rubber squeaking. It's going in on friday to be looked at! Cheers for the help! Monkeyalan I'll let you know what it is!

Was the noise coming from here?

No mate, the sound is coming from somwhere down the steering column, or maybe on the rack.
-
Check PAS fluid level, and check the system for leaks.
-
Checked and all is fine with that too!
-
did you have any luck with this yet?
-
Yes. The squeaking just went away by itself . Fu*k knows what it was. I bet that is no help to at all is it? sorry
-
err, not really
i'm pretty sure mine the top mounts
is the bit in the engine bay supposed to visibly move? :undecided:
-
Do you mean the universal joint (the bit that comes out of the bulkhead at floor level, on a VR6 next to the drivers side engine mount)? If so that should be covered by a rubber boot!
I should mention my top bush does still make a bit of a noise, but thats not what the noise was when it went into the garage. I reckon when it was in the garage and they were looking to for the cause they moved something that was rubbing and so the noise/vibration stopped!
Maybe try just having a fiddle with the universal joint and see if it helps. Oh and if it is the UV that needs a rubber boot get one as soon as you can!!
-
the UV you mean is the steering column one? the boot on that is knackered.
i meant the strut top mount that sits in the turrets on the inner wings. is it meant to move? I assume not.
-
The top plate shouldnt move. By that I mean the deep dished plate with the centre rod and nut showing.
What moves is under that and has probably siezed up!
-
well mine do! guess thats the source of the noise then
off to the garage i go.....
-
Si you will probably need to replace those plates because I believe they have some kind of plastic bearings in them!
That means taking the struts out completely, spring clamps etc. etc. - not a quick job!
-
i'll let the garage do it. I just haven't got the facilities or tools to be doing that sort of thing. it's been doing it for weeks now and is really starting to do my head in. oh well
