Just bought a Mk2 1988 GTi 8v. I've seen the majority of the Mk2's come in Red, White, Black and later in Red. However mine is in Silver and I've only see 2 others in silver and they were in the Gallery. Question is what's the name of my colour and is it a rare colour for the Mk2 GTi? The reason that leads me to believe it's rare is that I am finding it near on impossible to find body panels in my colour when there are plenty red, white and black panels about.
-
I dont think so. It might not be one of the most popular colours but its certainly not rare or special. People often say oak green is rare n stuff but personally i think thats rubbish. Its just a nice colour. Rare to me would be the purply blue edition 1 colour.

To be honest I've seen far more Blue, Oak Green, RED, Black and White Mk2 GTi than I have seen Silver. I base this on the availability of those colour specific body panels. I have seen plenty of Silver Drivers etc but only ever 1 GTi Mk2, and that was in the Gallery. I might even e-mail VW customer services and see if they hold a record on the number and colour of Mk2 GTi's sold in the UK.

Silver? Who's got a silver one?! :smug:
On a serious note though it is well known that silver GTI's are faster than any other colour.

Most of it is, however the worst bit is at the rear and the bonnet front lip (see below) so I'm after a replacement boot. Just needs a few things doing to get it through the MOT inluding a full exhaust, horn, brakes (will be using it as a track car so am uprating these anyway). Can't complain for the price I paid for it. Interior is near mint.

Yeah I can see what you mean... however like you say "get what you pay for" I did hear that later GTi models didnt suffer as much from rust due to a different body treatment, I would find a breaking later mk2 gti to take the boot off it, mine has a few rust bits under the bonnet near the front but I think I will scrape these off and then treat it.
Still wondering the best way to clean the engine bay up... At Ed38 saw alot of chromed up engine bays that looked sweet and really want to sort myself out with a 2.0 bottom end transplant.

16v big bumpers never came in silver & very rarely will you see a genuine big bumper silver 8v.
personally i really like the silver

Mine was originally a small bumper, wish the previous owner had left it that way! Yours'll look nice when those bits are sorted.

Slammed mk2 on here had a genuine big bumper 8 valve - he sold it to me and i sold it on - biggest mistake in my life when it comes to golfs as it was a mint motor and once it had the rms on there looked awesome. Have'nt seen one since.
