Title: Oil leak
Post by: Danny on 02 September 2006, 20:01
My 84 Rabbit is leaking oil. It seems like it's coming from above the oil filter. Could it be the oil filter sandwich plate? Does it even have one of those? Just leaks when running.

Probably got a leak from ya oil pump just above ya filter, i had the same problem. Inside is a skull shaped rubber washer which is probably perished mate>> Good luck

silly question but is your oil filter tight

Haha.. Ya my filter is tight. So I guess I need to take out the Oil Pump, right? Once its out then I can get to the "skull shaped rubber washer "? Correct homies? The leak comes from the thing the filter is attached to(I guess which is the pump) . At first it was a couple of drops. Now its become a freakin river. Gotta make it stop!

Check its not coming from one of the oil sensors on the filter housing, they can fail.

The bit the oil filter screws into is the 'oil filter housing'.  Some MK1s also have a plate between the oil filter & housing for the oil cooler, if its leaking between one of those you just need a new round seal to replace whichever one has gone.

Does the "Filter Housing" come off separately from the Oil Pump? Or do I need to take the Oil Pan off then the Oil Pump to get the Housing off? That would be the only way to check if the seals have failed, correct?

is this a 1.0-1.3 engine then?  If its a 1.5 - 1.8 the oil pump is at the bottom of the engine and has nothing todo with it.  Actually even if its a 1.0-1.3 engine the oil pump is on the driver side of the engine, so a leak above the filter would still have nothing to do with it

The filter housing is held on with 3 allen bolts and comes off.  Simply replace the gasket and see if that helps!  You need to take the oil filter off 1st though, and be prepared to loose a bit of oil ;)

That sounds easy enough. Does anyone have a website where I can find that housing gasket? My local auto part store doesn't seem to have it. Thanks rubjonny!

Whats the problem? If it has an oil cooler then you'll need to remove this before you can get to all 3 mounting bolts

You know... Its leaking from the top of the oil cooler! Finally found the source. Is there a gasket there? How do I take the cooler off?

Take the oil filter off, and you'll see a large nut on the thread, remove this and the oil cooler will come off. There is a rubber o'ring seal on it :)
