Has anyone who ditched the bypass valve thing on their heater subsequently had problems with an exploding matrix? I'm on the verge of doing mine but was wondering if it will last.
BTW, my VW dealer can't get the parts and as the car's a '91 I doubt I'll find owt better in the breakers.

nah i havent got them on mine and its ran fine for years...
you would be surprised in the breakers i have got some good sh!t from them before u just have to know what your looking for.....

I was thinking with this particular part that the ones in the 'yard will be at least as old as mine.

Hi, you should be able to get a new by-pass valve from VW, they're manufacturing them again. I got a new one only 10 weeks ago. I had to beat the parts bloke up and twist his arm to check it out. It cost about £32 inc vat. Part No. 191 819 911A. BTW the heater worked great after fitting the new valve.

I've been running bypass valve free for the last 10 months or so with lovely hot air and no matrix problems - as of yet ;-)

my GTI never had the valves removed when I bought it, and I've run it for nearly 2 years with no signs of the heater blowing (touch wood)

Even if it does blow just replace it with a mk3 matrix. And instead of saying blow its more like a trickle when it goes.
