Title: Door handles, what do you suggest as a replacement?
Post by: jaybv6 on 29 August 2006, 23:40
My passenger door handle is shot on my 88 GTi Mk2 and the the drivers is on the way out.  I bought two new replacements from Euro, and I thought job done.  So I fit the drivers handle and all seems sweet however opened and closed the door a few times and the metal trigger snapped.  Damn.

So I tried to make a door handle out of the two broken driver's hadles and just ended up in misery.  So I fit the passnger door handle and it's a crappy ill fit.

Anyhow, what's the best replacements to use.  Not interested in mega overpriced parts from VW.  More interested if anyone has used decent patent parts and if so how much were they and where did they come from.  Is this a common problem with Mk2?  Handles breaking that is.

Don't use pattern handles, they're poo!

Just use rear door handles modified to open front doors.

Is there a guide on how to do this?

Dunno, have a gander in the Mk2 maintenance section, if there isn't anything there I'll see what I can do for you tomorrow.

grease up the levers & mechs, this usually sorts em right out :)

Thanks, I'd do that if the levers hadn't already snapped.  The new one I bought snapped pretty much straight away so that's useless aswell.

I tried to look for a rear handle mod post but i can only find one for using rear handles for delocking.  I need the locks (at least on the drivers side) as I don't have remote locking (don;t even have Central Locking).

Oh from what you said it sounded like only the new drivers handle had snapped...  Or do you mean the mech inside the door?

Either way, get 2 VW handles from your local scrappy, look for MK3 Polos as these are the same as MK2 handles and should be a bit 'younger' then swap the lock barrels from your old handles over.

Grease everything up nice and robs yr fathers brother

Its dead easy to do, basically fiddle with the handle trigger and you'll see the catch mech moving up & down.  You need to remove this from the rear handle and swap on the one from your old front handle.  To do this you just need to bash out the roll pin :)

Sometimes its not possible to bash out the pin. I found i had to cut the top off the pin before it wanted to go anywhere.

Is that a better reply Han?
