Have this weird squeek and rattle and at first I thought it was the MDF parcel shelf or the plastic side pieces. But its not that.
It maybe the exhaust - had a look underneath and it all seems secure.
Had a second hand system fitted CAT back and didnt renew the rubber mounts.
Could it really just be that?
Whilst underneath I did have a quick look at suspension and couldnt see much wrong there, but is there a anti-roll bar at the rear? Wondering if there is it could be a bush gone.
Any Ideas folks?
The squeek is like as I'm moving off as if something is ummmm uh seperating, ya know taking up the strain like! sorry its weird and stumping me!
Sounds a bit like a creaking door that needs some oil. The rattle sounds as if its inside the car but pretty sure thats the exhaust middle box.
:undecided:
-
I would check the mounts to make sure you havnt dislodged on of them .
-
I did that and they all seemed fine!
Bit too much float for my liking and I could make it hit the underside of the car, so I'm thinking thats the rattle, but this squeek/creek has got me baffled.
-
let me know if you find what the rattle is cos i've got it too. it stops when i put the rear of the back passenger sideseat down. I've done everything i can to pad out the hinges and where it locks but it still does it.
-
Sure its that darned zorst system mate!
I was certain it was the parcel shelf or something associated with it, so got Billy to drive and I sat in the back. We hadnt gone more than 20 feet before I realised it was not inside the car!
Which peed me off havin spent a couple of hours "sorting" the parcel shelf!
-
I have a squeek from the back sometimes, and I'm 99.99% sure its the boot light push switch!
-
Sorry my description of the noises are bad. Put it this way you can hear them over the normal road/engine noise and the stereo on moderate volume!
The squeek is more like a creak of an opening door as if something is flexing and moving within the structure of the car.
-
Tis the exhaust!
The big main rubber mounts on the middle box have stretched so much that the exhaust was rubbing on the plate beneath.
Couldnt get the VAG parts yesterday so did a bodge with cable ties! Stopped the rubbing and rattling but now tranmits more noise!
-
i'll have to get mine checked because i'm going to go mental!

I FIXED IT!!!
it was the edge of the seat back rattling against the suspension turret bit. whacked a bit of carpet in their temporarily (yeah, right) and it stopped. now all i got to do is get the sqeuking steering fixed.
-
yea i get squeeking too its annoying
so
i turn my music up  and pretend it never happened

I have the same, think I'll try this. was it the passenger side? That's where mine sounds like it's coming from. The frequency of the squeak is such that it won't get drowned out by music unless you try to blow the speakers!
-
yeah, it disappeared for months then came back with a vengeance
all good now tho'. just gotta get the topmounts or whatever done and i'll be a happy rattle n squeak free chappy ( for about a week when i imagine the heatshield will come loose again  ).
-
My heatshield is about to fall off I'm sure! The manifold one that is!
Its making totally different noises now and at different revs! Low and high.
-
i think we're supposed to call it character

I have a 1997 Golf 16v which has been lowered by 35mm and has a Miltek exhaust fitted. The problem is that if I have a back seat passenger. the exhaust bangs on the back axle. I'm using the standard rubber hangers with large cable ties wrapped around them to stop them from stretching, but this still doesn't work. Does anyone have any ideas to stop this?
-
How was it lowered? Shorter springs are usually stiffer so you shouldnt be having that problem.
Also has the Milltec system been fitted correctly? Bends in the right place etc?????
-
The car is lowered by using the spax fixed rate kit which is a 35mm drop all around. The exhaust was fitted by Awesome GTI so I assume the bends are in the right places. They also re-checked it 3 weeks after I got the exhaust fitted.
