how do you know if your is on the way out before its too late?

If the lift pump fails, the other one will buzz or whine.

they can be loud without actually failing. when i first got my 16v the pump was annoyingly loud although still maintained perfect pressure.

only way to test is to test the pressure. if you come across a 16v pump id purchase it there & then. they aint the handiest thing to find when you need one

I had a mk2 2 litre 16v abf engined golf but the fuel pump was from the kr engine and it used to whine like crazy but ran fine other than that. I have read lots of times they are renound for the whining noises they make!
