Title: mark 3 Sunroof
Post by: Gozza on 27 August 2006, 14:58
Hi all,

The sunroof on my mark 3 (1993 model) only moves back about 5mm then stops. I have taken the motor off and it works fine by the look of it winding all the way from end to end. I just cant seem to budge the damn thing, anyone got any ideas, need to sort asap as the drainage holes int he sunroof are blocked causing it to leak into the cabin :(

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried using the emergency allen key thing ? Could be a tired motor.

Most likely the screw drives!
Aint got one on my Golf but had this problem with both my 405's!
Try WD40 and then use the allen key to try and shift it.

Thanks all.

Problem I have is I cant see enough of the internals that look like they would benefit from a WD40 squirting. I have also tried the allen key thing but it just gets stuck and twists with out turning, I have had to resort to taping it up at the moment as the water was literally p*ssing in and into the passenger footwell. Damn cars.

Try the allen key agin but use a hex bit in a socket and ratchet. Then as you are trying to turn it try moving the glass with your other hand. Try like rocking it back and forth.

Thanks will give that a go at the weekend, out of interest what did you mean by "Most likely the screw drives!" ?

What is it with VW, did they think "right this may be used often, why dont we use the worst possible type of tool requirement here like a Allen key bolt so it just gets chewed up anytime its stuck", damn muppets

The drives that move the sunroof are like rods with a screw thread running longditudinally. These pass through the srew drive of the motor and give the motion. Virtually the same as a window wind mechanism.
These drive rods can get rusted and seize up!

Ah I see, yes I can see this when I removed the motor, all looked ok but I assume I can only see a small portion of it, doubt I would be able to WD it but will try.

Can I assume if the motor works from end to end it is ok, they dont still work but lose power or summat do they ? Just trying to rule out probable causes.

Thanks again.

If the motor is working then I dont believe its the cause of your problem.

a metal coathanger will do the trick, just tape up the end so it doesn't punch a hole in the tubing anywhere.  why not try at the bootoms of the drains first, perhaps thats where the blockage is ;)
AFAIK they drain into the front/rear arches :)

Edit: Also check where the drain tubes pass thru the front wings just in front of the front doors, on a MK2 they pass thru a small hole, they sometimes get pinched between the wing & bodywork if someone has had the wing off in the past.
