Title: What does a "service" involve - oil, filters, etc? anything else?
Post by: ScottMk2Gti16v on 27 August 2006, 11:31
I got a mk2 golf gti 16v about 6 months ago. I know it was fully serviced in December last year and I want to get it serviced again now.

Now I'm no expert on cars - my idea of a service is to get:

1. Oil change
2. Fuel filter change
3. Oil filter change
4. Air filter change
5. Checks on coolant and power steering fluid

Is there anything "standard" that I should get done that I can't think of?  Anything that's recommended to change on a mk2 regularly?  How often does the timing belt need done? - and if you don't know when it was last changed how do you know when to do it?

I just want to be able to go to a garage with a list of things and get them done.

For what it's worth... A couple of months ago I had all the spark plugs and leads changed as it wasn't firing quite right.

Thanks for any help.

If it's a full service, you'll be looking at:

Oil change including sump bung washer change,
Oil filter,
Spark plugs,
Air filter,
Fuel filter,
Coolant check,
P/S fluid check,
Washer bottle re-fill,
Plus they should also do a C/O mixture check, making sure your not burning too much or too little fuel.

They should also do a general good look around the car checking the important bits like tyre wear, brake pad wear, suspension points, exhaust security, front and rear wheel bearings etc etc.

If the garage is any good they'll give you list of any potential problems, but they won't just crack on with the job as they'll need your approval.

If you don't know the cambelts history then it's a good idea to get it done anyway, book time for a cambelt change on a 16v is 1.10 hrs, so don't get ripped off for it.

And let them know the plugs are relatively new, and they may not need to change them.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks Lewy, that's a good help.

Looks like I hadn't missed anything major from my list.  I'll have a dig through the receipts I got with the car just to make sure the cambelt wasn't changed recently, if not I'll maybe get it done.

Cheers,
Scott

For an 8V the cam belt is reccomended to be changed every 40.000 miles, don't know whether it is different for a 16V.

If you don't know when the cambelt was last changed then you should just change it as a matter of precaution.

Don't commit to any costly garage work until you have been able to look for yourself and verify it, or get a second opinion.

Well done on the purchase.
