ok, so the golf failed its MOT a couple of weeks back. One of the failures was that the manifold is blowing.
Now, what sort of remedy is there for this? The machanic mentioned that he may have to drill something???? Sorry I am a bit thick when it comes to mechanical things......
The reason I ask is because I need to save up before I can get it sorted, and I dont want to skimp on repairs/replacements. Ie, if it needs a new exhaust system I can get a decent one.

Good excuse to get a new manifold with a bigger bore!

4-2-1. in chrome.

I did not think they could fail a car for a blowing manifold :o. Bit much init................. go to a no pass no fee M.O.T station, they usually let you off in order to get there cash :)

It is a good excuse for new stuff, but you need to find out exactly what the problem is. It might just be the manifold gasket, or it could be the manifold itself. Not sure about the drilling thing though! With my reasonable mechanical knowledge it might be that one of the studs has snapped and needs drilling out?!?!
If you intend to modify things it's always better to do it when things need replacing anyway, much more efficient!! 8)

More than likely it is the manifold gasket leaking where it goes to the head. Don't know what he would mean by drilling unless he breaks a stud taking the mainfold off then he would have to drill and ez out the rest of the stud. ???

Hmmm....yeah, I guess its one of them things that needs to wait until I can get an idea of whats actually wrong. :( Hopefully it wont be too expensive.
*sigh*
Yep, I have gone to this garage for years, theyre alright down there. Still need a caliper and back box too.
I started it up today and got it out of the garage, it sounds proper rough :(

yeah sounds like manifold gasket!!, as mentioned earlier the only reason they would need to drill is if they snapped a stud off, but any carefull mechanic would 'prep'it in order not to snap studs!! as i should imagine they are and ass to get to anyway!!!, my mk2s got its mot in jan but i cants be arsed so im floggin as it is!!!, found a snice 16ver today just hope i can flog mine before it goes!!! :( :(

Yep, just need to start looking for a decent secondhand s/s exh :)
-
It has to be a significant leak to fail the MOT test.
a slight blow is acceptable.
