i currently own a mk3 1.4 with everything modded and decided the time has come for more power.I was going to do a engine conversion, but i was advised not to from a few reliable sources. So i have decided to take all my mods off and sell the car as i bought it,the thing is i cant decide between a vr6 or a gti ::) please give me your advice and opinions
regards
Chris

vr6! vr6! vr6! you looking at mk3 gti's i presume?
-
agreed, has to be vr6 if your're opting for a mk3.
-
aye! sadly i cant afford vr6 insurance :(
-
same as but VR's rock! I sat in my mate mk3 VR and ive never been so scared in my life!
-
looking at your car blue, you reckon i should get clear indicators or smoked?
-
if you cant plump for the vr6 for price or insurance reasons then get a 2.0 16v gti there spose to be pretty quick 150bhp im sure theres som eon here with one!!! i know mrwottos got one but i dont know of any one else!!!! if you have the cash or can afford the insurance the vr6 is the beasty to have!!!! ;D
-
go with the 2.0l valver if you can't afford the 6 right now. get a few more years NCB then get a nice VR6 Highline. Those are well nice rides. :)
-
My 16valver is quite fast, not really pushed it yet, did 120 in it the ther day tho, and had loads left in it.
The later ones pumps out approx. 160bhp so i am told!!
Mines fast anyways :)
If its of any help to you, mine costs me ?420 a year fully comp with tesco's, that with 8 years ncd and me bird on it as a named driver to!
Make sure you check the engine for signs of boy racer abuse tho! Had mine for 4 months now and am very happy with it!!!
Hope this helps
-
;D thanks for the advice.have to see if i can get insurance for the vr cuz im only 22 with 3y no claims but ill have a go
ps it is the mk3 model i am after
-

later ones pump out 160bhp?! .. mines one of the last ones really...
it is damn quick... i've been 135 and theres still more go in it.. when its safe i'll max it out.. then i'll be pleased with it.. i'm also runnin optimax now.. seems nicer after a few loads in there :)
i woulda got a '6 if it werent for the insurance.. i reckon you'll be lucky to get a quote at under ?1200 - ?1400 for a '6..
ohh and dont get a 'family car' like mrwotto's :P hehe..
(ohh and mrwotto.. clean ya wheels!!)
-
yes you are right.rang adrian flux and tesco and they quoted me 1200-1350 :'(,if i dont get anything under 1000 im gonna get a gti.buy the way which is the better one 8v or 16v
-
argg!.. the 16v like everyones been saying in this thread.. the 8v is a dog..
and the insurance companys dont seem to notice the increase in power between the two that much ;)
8v - 115 bhp
16v - 150 bhp
vr6 - 174/175 bhp
no brainer really :)
at your age+experience you should be able to get 16v insurance for between around 700 - 800quid
-
yeah true i duno why insurance is soo high on an 8v. adrian flux know alot about golfs aswel ::)
-
does insurance actually drop when you're 30
or is that just myth ?
-
dunno ill let u know next year!!!! ::)
-
July for me.
Be a nice present if it actually does..
-
yeah october for me, theres been 'myths' about age brackets like, 21, 25,30 and so on but to be honest age hasnt got fack all to do with it, its driving experience and no claims discount!!! well from what i can gather!!!!! ::)
-
.......its a combination of things as mentioned by Kniterider. Hitting the big 30 does help tho.
I recently paid 385squid, for my M reg 16v - thats with no claims protection and the missis on it too - living in Surrey helps.
31 in two weeks, woo hoo!!
-
experience definitely... it goes down a lot after 2 years, age also... 25 is a drop... and... whether you're a pesky student or a full time worker also affects things quite a bit, i'd bet being a homeowner and/or married might too
-
well im 29, married, 3 kids, full protected ncd, no points etc, and my 1.8 20v gti mk4 is ?300 thats with wifey on it!!!, but mind you my car is only a group 10 for some reason!!!! ;D
-
My wife and I are both under 30 and insured our VR fully comp for ?590.
I didn't think that was to bad :)
-
get married lads thats the key.a couple of years ago I had a 5 gt turbo.(dont rip the pi$$)the premium was ?50 less if I had the car insured with the wife as a named driver on a provisonal license, than it was to insure the car just for myself being 28 clean everything and 5yrs NCD that was with Tescos,
-
theres nowt wrong with my family car with dirty wheels :)
