I have my '91 GTi 8v in for its first service tomorrow since I bought it and hope you can provide me with the following info. My rev counter, MFA and water temp guage dont function the majority of the time (having come to life briefly twice during the last week!). Clearly there is just something loose somewhere (rather than them being fcuk'd ;) ) so I am hoping to advise the garage of where to check!.
Advice gratefully received as always
Cheers

Sounds like an earthing problem to me. Should be a brown wire off ot the back of the clocks that goes to the ground stud on the back of the block. Check behind the clocks and see if this wire has come loose or maybe is corroded. Also check the vacumm line at the back of the clock and see if it is split or leaking. could be the MFA problem. :)

Does the whole dash need to come off to get access to this?

May be able to get a look by pulling out your head unit.

Head Unit = Stereo :)
Have you tried removing the fuse for a day or so, this resets the unit possibly will solve your problem?
I also have a spare set of clocks in the for sale section, 120mph 7k rpm let me know if you're interested ;)
