Hey, i'm looking to buy one of these as a first car, is there anything particular to look out for when buying? wanting a later one as poss, 1991, most seem to have been to the moon and back, whats the chances of a 100k+ one being ok for a fair while yet?
thanks

look at www.matey-matey.com they have a great buying guide.
golfa that are 100k plus are fine as long as they have some service history and u do regular oil changes etc i had one that did 229000k and it was fine till the oil pump broke cos i was lazy n couldnt be arsed to fix it. my current gti is on 143k and is fine although it had 80 when i bought it.
best things to look for are good bodywork cos the engines are easy to fix and parts are readily available where as dodgy bodywork is more involved and expensive
whatever u get theres loads if help available on here so dont be afraid to ask!

cheers, what is generally the best model to go for? are some 1.6's injection of carbed? cheers
-
there carbed buddy, i had a 1.6 and with a few tweaks here and there it was lovely. you can get a 1.8 too but it depends if you wanna pay that extra on insurance its entirely up to you. golfs will last you forever unless you let a schmuck of a mechanic at it like me hehe.

i love my driver - and i've had plenty of problems with mine, but now a year on me and the car are mega happy, every time i drive i feel as happy as the day it was delivered onto the drive! :)
-
1.8's a no no, lol, too much.
75bhp as standard ye? what are commen tweaks, adding gti bits i guess?
-
Yeah, most add the gti cam and exhaust for more power.
-
Make sure it doesn't over rev on idle or when driving if it does walk away, can be a pain to fix. (speaking fron experience)
I had a 1.8, there isn't much point doing it up, wait build up some NCB and buy a real GTI.
I'm so glad i didn't spend more than 50 pound on a set of wheels for my old car.
