Forgive me, for I have sinned........
I've done something really silly - I sold my 8v Mk2............and bought a 2002 Pug 406 HDi 90:cry:
Unfortunately, the 130 mile a day commute has begun to take its toll on my 8v and at 159,179miles (32K in the last year) I've gone and sold it to a good mate (A8WPG on the www.uk-mkivs.net foums) who is a Golf fanatic - he has a V6 4-motion. Supercharged.
Its in safe hands but I miss it already. The (don't get angry with me) Pug that has replaced it is awful, very sensible and saving me about 35% on my fuel bills. I wanted to keep the Golf as a 3rd car but with a house move due any day I needed the cash. I now feel like a 36 year old!
Still, its not all bad - I can now start looking for a 16v MK2 with some mods or a 20vt MK2 to replace it in about 6 months time.

Dont worry, your not the only one, i have my Mk2 8v for sale for exactly the same reasons but dont think i'm going to get a 406 though (possibly a 306).
I'll probably always regret getting rid but i said that after i sold my Mini Cooper 1.3i

Don't make me feel any worse!!! I'll still be here to get my fix of MK2's and especially keeping an eye on Dizzies creation in the Dub Projects section - I'm totally hooked on his work!
Can't wait for my second MK2!!

i never understand people that buy a french car. it can only be the price that swings it.. bloody awful motors... i would have though a vw owner would have had a far better education when buying a car... go and sit in that corner with people that buy a rover/MG

Nowt wrong with a french diesel engine. It's the bodywork that lets them down.
I am going the diesel route too, dunno what yet, but i have some ideas.

I'm not sure about the Pug diesel engine thing either - I had a 407 as a hire car for a few weeks and despite the loads of torque Im not very convinced - the throttle response and turbo lag was terrible - the internal space didnt come close to our old E34 family hack - Its only bonus was the economy and that wasn't consistant - dropping it off and getting into a 16V Golf made me appreciate the GTi again (evem th beemer felt a better car too!! - I feel sorry for anyone who paid £18000 for such a dull car that looks like a beeched basking shark!

I like the VW diesels (hence the switch from my S3 to the Leon FR TDi), but the Pug was more refined than a VW diesel for the same money/age/mileage. The Pug is cheaper for a reason!
Like you say though, the bodywork aint great, turbo lag is huge and there aint much boost with 90bhp! Max'd it out today at 107! Not exactly heavenly. Got home and took the Leon out for a rag - thank heavens for Revo!
Still miss the Mk2 though.
