Hi, i've fallen in love with my girlfriends mk3 and am seriously considering dropping into the VAG pool :D
but after being used to my 206 i need something quick, handles well, and has an excellent options package (like i think the VR6 has leather heated seats?)
have been told the vr6 is nose heavy cos of the lump, and looking at the times sheets in the back of PVW the 1.8T's seem to be the better car, but i don't believe all i hear and don't believe all i read, i'm not that naive :P
so i thought i'd ask the people who really know (you guys ;)) Can you help me out here? hopefully then i'll round on this forum more often
Cheers
Dan

well they are two very different beasts and the 1.8t will be a mk4! if you like the mk3's then get the vr (you will hard pushed to find a low milage one now mind) if you want a newer car then get the mk4, you have two choices for the mk4 too, 150 or 180! i think its all down to wallet and which one you find a better car to drive/look at! the choice is yours! :undecided:
-
u cud always get a mk4 v6 4motion then u get the power of the vr6 with 4wd. but having said that ive got a 1.8t mapped up (obviously) an it flys so thats my choice handles amazin on standard springs too.
-
Or you could get the diesel, thats bloody fast as well
-
and thats not a joke either pd150 chipped to 180 lol
-
It wasn't meant to be a joke, i've driven a couple and bloody hell do they shift
-
am tempted by the diesel but someone stated that as long as i remember they have a real narrow power band , then it'd be fine, but i assume this to be bull also :D
i really like the sound of the VR6
but i like the potential from the 1.8T
and the 4WD also sounds fun, damn too many options :(
can anyone give a rough price for a 'good - excellent' condition example of each of the above?
(1.8T - VR6 - 4Motion - pd150
cheers
-
i would say 7-8k for a decent example for each one
-
dude if i was you id go for the power cos youre gonna be gutted if you bye a standard 18t cos you'll be getting peeps like me whooping past ya in my j plate 2.0 8v they dont like it and who wouldnt buying a fairly new motor and getting whooped by a mk2! four door!lol
-
That is until you spend the cash getting it remapped and a nice turbo put on it.
-
To be honest i think you're onto a winner whatever engine you pick.
-
get a vr and then stick a turbo on it!!! :smug: its the sound that got me into my vr,and i had an impreza turbo!
-
Unbias opinion.
VR6 - awesome sound, no replacement for displacement.
1.8T - Immensly tunable, Newer engine.
-
horses for courses, probably best to drive both and make your own mind up. 1.8T will have the advantage of being newer (if only by 1 year in some cases).
-
yeah then they fly!!!!
-
Storm do that lovely Vortech supercharger conversion for the Vr6..........
-
had a go in a m8's 1.8t the other day, it's all chipped up to 190bhp and all i can say is "I'm glad i bought another VR", it's just a bag of wind, with no real pull, doesn't pin yer in yer seat like a VR, mine would piss on it and i haven't even de-cat'd it or anything yet, plus it just didn't feel as solid or have the usuall Vw build quality....
Give me a V-rar anyday.......
-
ooh is that a drag race i can smell comin on, see what the bag of wind can pull out????
-
strubby airfield at dawn......
:afro:
-
my buddy has just got a v6 4 motion im tempted now
-
all i can say is the 1.8T is a far more advanced example of the golf than a vr
-
Why?
-
newer everything, shape engine inetrior handling,16's as standard
-
What about the 4 motion/R32? they are vr6 engines.
-
yeh 24v though mate
-
Thats right, but it is still a vr6 engine.
Both vr6 and 1.8T engines are superb, you can't go wrong with either really
-
were also on about mk3 vr6 and not 4motion or r32
-
cant dispute a vr6 mate ive had one and can say there pretty impressive for a car of there time, but i couldnt go back to one as my sole every day runner,
-
were also on about mk3 vr6 and not 4motion or r32
Thats right. But its a fairer to compare the later vr6 with the 1.8T as they are both newer engines
After all the 12v vr6 is basically an early 1990's design, the 1.8T is a much newer design.
-
Unbias opinion.
VR6 - No replacement for displacement.
1.8T - Apart from BOOST!.
Is how that should have read.
-
were not comparing r32 or 4motion,its about is the 1.8t better than the vr6 mk3,i know what ya saying about the r32 but come on ya cant realy compare an r32 to a 1.8t,there worlds apart
-
lets remember we're also comparing the 2 standard engines, a standard VR6 would destroy a standard Mk4 1.8t, 0-60 in over 8secs....
-
The Mk4 is a heavier car, and if you only get the 150bhp version it's got less bhp per ton than a Mk3 16v (which is also 150bhp).
So the Mk3 VR6 is older, and it's only a little lighter than the Mk4, but it's got more power to begin with.
The Mk3 isn't that old anyway, I saw an S reg recently, so that's a 98/99 car.
As someone said it's down to wallet and preference really.
A good Mk3 VR6 will be £3-4k (for decent milage, you can get them for less if you'll accept higher milage)
An early Mk4 1.8T will probably be about £5k
Later Mk4 1.8T upto £8-9k
As for the Mk4 TDI's, they're getting very popular especially with the chipping possibilties.
You can find them for as little as £3-4k for a 130 or about £6k for a 150.
Best to check out your favourites to see which you prefer to drive.
-
thought they stopped making the mk3 in 1997?? :undecided:
-
I thought the Mk3 went up to R plate (which is 98, right ?), then I saw this S reg. It was probably built in 98 but not sold right away, hence registered on an S plate. Like the ultra rare K plate mk2s that come up every so often.
-
r32's are way too expensive not in the same league! 1.8t's are nice and i like the sound of a turbo, but come on the v rarrrrr sound cannot be substituted! as for newer and all that,my vr has all the mod cons, windows, wheels etc etc dodgey fuses the lot!
