Title: Engine problems
Post by: Rmachines on 18 August 2006, 20:59
Hi every one, I'm new to the forum, I have had a MK3 1.4 for a while and have just got my self a GTI to do up.

However, my 1.4 has a knocking from the bottom end, gets louder on acceleration, Now i guess this is the Main Crank bearng??  I cant afford to have that fixed AND do my GTI!!  I need to keep the 1.4 for a bit as well as a backup! Do you think its going to be OK?

I know this is a forum for the GTIs and no doubt this will soon be a second home for me, but any help would be muchly appreciated!!

Also has any one ever had one changed.. and what sort of price?

Hope some one can help

Regards, Ross.

Knocking under acceleration will be big end bearings. You will need to get it rebuilt, or a new lump put in.

I thought the Main Bearing knocked under load and the big ends quietnd under load? i could be wrong lol

Do you think its a job that can be done with a haynes manual and allot of patients?
Or. any idea how many hours in a garage?

Cheers, Ross
