Title: Tyres...?
Post by: goldfinger on 19 February 2003, 13:22
Hey Peeps

Here's one for you. Which is the best choice for rubber? I've had Yokohama's on my MkII before, but the last time I changed my tyres, I got a good deal on some Pirelli's. What do you guys think?

Also, are 15" wheels better than 14's? Will putting 15's on slow my MkII down considerably? And do they handle better than 14's?

Cheers H

hiya,

15's are generally considered the best for handling. Not too sure why you think it will slow you down... the better handling might get you through the corners quicker!

Go for Yoko A539's or something similar in 195/50 size. They are nice and cheap since it is a very common tyre size.

Its not so much the wheel size that slows you down it is the total radius including your tyres that will slow you down.  If you get low profile tyres that will match the radius of your old tyres then it will not.  You will be able to get better grip when accelerating and when cornering this means you will be able to go alot quicker.

You've obviously learnt your lesson buying Pirelli's:-)

I remember buying 4 new P600s for a 16v (P600 we're standard issue) and it was like driving an ice skate.

I soon replaced the front pair (only took 18,000 miles!) for a couple of BF Goodrich's. The car was transformed.

Apparently (!!?) they were an easy match for Yoko's but lasted much longer and cost less.

When my Golf is finished its rebuild, it'll be 4 new BFs, even if i have to import them from the US.

Regards,
Justin
