Title: help HELP smoking golf GTI
Post by: BOB2 on 04 February 2003, 21:56
Please can any body help me,my golf has started to smoke.it is a mk 2 8v PB engine.
It does it when you put your foot down from 3000 rpm onwards when you put it under load.it dosen't really smoke at all when you drive it normanly.
I have checked the breather and the compressions and they both seem to be ok and within spec.
Any help would be cool.

Usually, smoking under a load is a sign of worn rings. I guess you have realised this as you have done a compression check and checked the breather.
A common problem for these is for the valve guide oil seals to wear. However, symptons of them is smoking on start up (after being left, say overnight) and decelerating from a relatively high speed run. this doesn't match your description.
Would you be able to describe the smoke as blue (oil), black (overfuelling) or white (water)?
Out of interest, what were your compressions? And did you do a dry and wet test?

it is blue smoke, the compreesions are
no:1 10.1 bar
no:2  9.5 bar
no:3  10.1 bar
no:4  9.7 bar
these were carried out dry,if you mean i did not put oil in the bores dry,
not sure what else to do apart worrie about how much this going to cost.

Those compressions don't look too bad and they are all fairly balanced too. I'll tell you what I'm a bit stumped too now. Anyone else got any ideas?
Its not something minor like the oil level is too high or anything like that is it?
Guess the only other thing you can do is wait and see if it gets worse and then maybe the source of the problem will become more obvious :-/

Not being a mechanic, simply being the person who pays the mechanic, you need to investigate a valve in the sump. Maybe someone in the forum can give me its precise name.

All I know is that it is a common problem and relatively cheap to fix.

The problem only happens when you stir the engine into life. Oil gets sloshed through the valve, and somehow ends up being thrown into the cylinder, where it gets ignited - and you see smoke.
