Yep there is a gear that is meant to go on the end, it should have been attatched when you pulled it out of the gearbox.
-
Oh thats not good then is it?
What would you suggest i do now please Slick????
-
well presuming it has fallen off in the gearbox then it needs to be retrived, the gear peices themselves can be bought from VW i am pretty sure, however you will need to know which colour it is that you will need, i believe there are green, white, and red. Mine was a red on (89 valver)
Retrieving it i have heard people just run it for a while, then drain the box, and all the reminance of the old gear come out with that. Not the best idea i reckon personally, but i have heard it works.
-
I've just sucked out some of the oil via the speedo hole say about 200ml and i did not see anything in there had a route around did not feel any thing either.
The reason i was in there was the speedo was not working so it may well have dissappeared a while ago?
So now the job of finding out what colour it was?
If i buy a new speedo cable will this gear not come with it?
Thanks for all your help on this.
-
Unfortunately not, the cable is just the part to connect into the back of the clocks and mount onto the gearbox. If it has fallen off a while ago then drain the box and you should see the parts of it coming out in the oil.
-
gearbox drained no signs of it at all
Maybe the guy who had it before me had some work done on the box and it was lost then?
I just gotta find out what colour gear i need now.
If any one can help the golf is a 1990 1.8 16v
Cheers

Whats the max speed shown on your clocks? The 120 and 160 mph clocks use the same colour gear (white?) and the 140mph ones a different one (red?) .
Can't remember for sure which colours are which but if you do a search the details are here somewhere!
-
other way round ;)
-
Cheers i got 160 clocks so i need a...RED one?????
-
Yep. Cheers Jonny!
-
cool thanks guys i have just found the pt number as well on a previous post, thanks to jonny.
Thanks for your help on this guys

Just for reference for the future: Speedo gear, £2.70+vat, Speedo cable £32.90+vat all genuine prices.
-
The same thing happened to me.
Don't forget to by the 99p circlip available separately from VAG,this holds the gear on the end of the cable and stops it falling of next time,
Or you will have two gears roaming around your box like me
-
Note: The circlip will come off with a bit of persuasion, just make sure you have your hands in a box or something with a top to stop it flying off. I did it in the staff room at work and it pinged around the room and ended up in the sink. Muchos fun trying to follow it around the room with your eyes. It's a stubborn bastard i tell thee.
-
If your anywhere near me i have some gearbox oil you can have cheap. North east.
-
Will the circlip not be on the new cable?
-
Probbably not. Its like saying wont the oil filter come with the bottle of oil.
-
Mmmm I spose but seeing as I bought the gear and the cable I thought it would have come with one of them but obviously not
-
No the circlip deffo doesn't come with the circlip on it. Makes good fun trying to get it off and then put it back on.
-
OK so now i have the cable, gear and the circlip thing(a round incomplete ring of metal)
So where does the ring go ?
Does it go in the recess on the end of the speedo cable then the gear pushes onto that?
Cheers
-
Yup thats the one.
-
Cheers for that i'll have a go at fitting that later
-
All sorted
Thanks to everyone who helped my project car now has a working speedo/ MFA
Cheers
