Hi folks, been looking at a few mk2's. I am pretty familiar with the spec changes over time, but wondered what the deal was with the chrome insert on the door handles (outside handles)
Some have them, some don't. Was it a case of it being standard on some cars? or a case of people removing them / or adding them.
Personally I'm not a great fan - which brings me to my next question.
Can they be easily removed? or do they need to be replaced with a black insert?

They just pop out, flat head screw driver does it best. They get moved about so much I'm not sure what had them as standard! Would be easy to replace them with black ones, or to spray yours, or even filler over the recess to make it nice and smooth, whatever you like!!!

Ta,

seems only the early/low spec ones got them as std, the GTIs & Drivers generally had black plastic inserts :)
-
mine has chrome ones, which have been sprayed black (but this was on the two k-jet ones i have owned  )
-
I have seen these too, I'm assuming earlier GTIs had them instead of the crappy plastic ones?

I was looking at the 56k grey Gti 8v (1990) on Ebay.
That has them (chrome) and IMO, made the car look rubbish! especially when combined with steels and orange rear lights.
Whilst on the subject of mk2s, what was the deal with tinted glass? The run out models (8v) seem darker and IMO look much better for it./

its an option, my 89 driver had it but my 90 GTI didn't. It makes a big difference with it fitted though!

Jonny - are you talking about the tinted glass? if so, I agree. Looks very 'basic' without it.
-
yeah tinted glass :)
I've since fitted it to the GTI, much better.

Mine doesn't have tinted glass
But my eyes have oaklies so meh
