Car :1898 G reg 1.8 Gti 8v
First of all, i'm not sure if mk2's came with an electric aerial however it looks stupid up whilst driving. What can i disconnect to stop this, is there a certain cable behind the headunit?
Also, my central locking does not work on any doors, i can replace parts using my old driver but I need to know where and what things i should be looking to replace.
Lastly (i think...) my temperature guage only goes up a tiny bit, at it's not necessary but quite annoying as everything else on the dash works. i replaced the blue temp sensor (with one from VW) a few days ago.
Oh and another...very sorry...when i got my car the idle was set at tad under 1,500 RPM so we've reset it to about 900RPM is there any reason why the previous owner would have done this?
Thanks for your time
Tim

Is your ISV working all right? If you find the revs dipping to low when you slow for junctions and depress the clutch, it could be a problem with the ISV which the previous owner tried to overcompensate for by raising the revs? Or maybe it was just badly set up?

It seems fine now we lowered the idle rate, the revs don't go to low...He claimed he had it 'set-up' before i bought it off him...maybe it just came unadjusted..?

I don't reckon it's common for the idle to jump up 500 odd with no help! Maybe the guy just didn't know what he was doing? There's an excellent tuning guide by Rubjonny in the child board at the top, well worth looking at.

It certainly is a great guide, but it seems to run fine at the moment so i'm going to leave it alone for a while. Any idea of the other problems. May sway the central locking pump in the boot with one from my old Driver.

how would i know if my car has c/l or not?
-
there will be a pump incased in foam under the n/s rear light in the boot.
to stop you aerial going up you need to disconnect the power to it. it'll be coming though the bulkhead behind the glovebox. usually it's a blue wire from the headunit that powers it. just disconnect that and insulate it off.

1. They didn't, but open the bonnet and check for an extra red wire to the battery (hopefully!!) with an inline fuse. This will run to the aerial, disconnect it :)
2. As above.
3. Run the car from cold and feel the lower radiator hose. If it gets warm straight away then the thermostat is stuck open or missing!
4. Did you reset the idle 'properly' as per my guide? If not then you should really do it properly, the car wont run right if you dont. The reason for the high idle may be the idle switch is broken, or perhaps the throttle cable is too tight! Make sure you hear it click when you close the throttle, and check the wiring behind the t'body isn't snapped.
Do you find the idle can be a bit unsteady at times?

Yup can be but usually quite stable.
All my dad did was adjust it and it fell straight to where it is...
I'll check the thermostat and so on..:)
cheers!

When cold it can be a bit high/uneven, but when warm the idle should be rock steady. If you find it sometimes haunts, and stalls, then the idle switch needs looking at :)

my 92 runout gti has an electric aerial but no beesting??
-
The beesting was a 16v thing :)
Some 8vs got it, but I think it was an option. AFAIK an electric aerial was never an option on the MK2 :)
Perhaps it was a dealer fit accessory? Or someone bought one off ebay & fitted it. Thats what I did

Had a look ands there's no obvious power coming from the aerial. all the connections come off the loom.
Would the head unit power it as it works with no ignition? It annoys me.
Also it turns out it doesn't have c/l, ive got all the pices from old car, easy job?
