Title: rolling roads
Post by: purplespot1973 on 11 August 2006, 21:45
always wanted to take my golf for a full rolling road tune up, but know (obviously!) that they can "drive" the car pretty hard. Firstly, are there any in the west sussex area, local to worthing, brighton or surrey, guildford areas and if so, are they insured if they make the engine go bang, or is it my problem? :undecided:

not sure of any round here (i'm in worthing) but we did a froum rolling road day last year so maybe we could sort another one out at some point?

they did basic checks on the cars before we went on but i'm pretty sure its you're tuff titties if it does go pop. there's no reason why it hould be any different on a rolling road compared to normal driving (thrashing). ;)

do they do one run then see if its running right then if its not fettle it a bit so it is, then do a second run or do they just see what everyone has got at what ever state or condition the car is in? (if you follow me)

Most rolling roads will not be insured for your engine failures, thats your problem, if it not strong enough, dont run it!  And will make you sign a for basically saying this, managed to do the bottom end on my scirocco last year on one! All fixed and been back on, was fine this time!

Wat sort of power people getting out of there standard Gti's, 8v or 16v?

Hi guys,

Excuse my ignorance, i have just purchased a 16V GTI and she is running a bit rough on idle and she doesn't seem as fast as she ought too.

Is a rolling road the only way to properly get her  tuned up? Are there any other options?

And how much, on average, do these tune ups cost?

Maybe we can get a group of us going and get a discount?

There are a few guides on how to set the car up properly, so it runs sweet.  A rolling road is necessary to get the very best out of it though as they can test the engine under load at various speeds :)

Hang on a minute! Why are we planning to hold this all the way down in Surrey? Could we look at a location more central so people from the North & South will have to travel the sameish distance?

Depends they use to redline my mini all the time but it's peak power was up there anyway. TO be fair the likely hood of a car blowing up on the rollers is pretty small. THe rolling road I use for the minis is run by a chap called stuart, he told me in all the years he's been rr ing cars (He does about 20 a week) he's only evber had 1 go pop and that was a high boost turbo'd mini.

None the less it's scary has hell hearing your car making that much noise and not moving while stoof outside it!

They will take them to about 7k, peak power on valvers is usually around 6.5k (so naturallly it will be less on an 8v). It's easy to see as the power will keep increasing then drop off on a graph, which would be the indication to take your foot off the accellerator.

I frequently take mine all the way round to 7k when joining certain motorways, feels stronger all the time.

They will take them to about 7k

That's spot on for a valver if they know what they're doing. The power graph I've got for mine shows that they let off the accelerator at 7k as it was starting to drop on power by then

i think silverstone cost us £40 each i think correct me if im wrong.i think most cars are rr tested in 4th gear well mine was.mine was the first one in the rollers and yes it is quite scary to hear your car getting some stick but they do know what they are doing and unless youre car is already fooked the chances of them blowing it are nil.i think they ran mine about 5 times and it got better and better.i will say one thing though hearing you car getting a abit of a whipping sounds really cool cos you dont get to hear it in the same way when youre inside it.id be up for another rr day id be more than happy to leave it in their capable hands but funds are abit laps at the mo
