Title: Engine? Standard vs Swap
Post by: Ows on 24 December 2003, 18:45
Right..

Been having thoughts, im looking in the new year to get a mk3, (prob a 8v gti) and gradually getting it to my desired spec.

What I wanted to ask is if anyone has done any engine swaps or conversions involving a 1.8t lump or a 2.9 VR6 lump, J wondered what probs im likely to encounter.. ( I would be undertaking the swap myself with my bro and friends, no laughing please)

After the lump is installed, I think ill take it to AmD and see what magic they can work..

Looking forward to reading all your thoughts.. :)

Cheers

To be honest i would save your time and cash, and go and buy a vr6 to start with.
Then spend your time and cash doing it up.

Have to agree with '6, go and buy the vr6 and be done with it. A half converted mk3 with the wrong engine in it is almost worthless. I have done a mk3 8v to vr6 conversion, used all the parts out of a rolled car, insurance company just about $hit themselfs when I told them. They don't like cars that have been interfered with :(.
The cost of the car plus the doner car, the work and the value of the result don't make that type of conversion worth it. If your going to do a swap, make it something unique or interesting and fast  ;). Just my opp. ;).

Thanks for your input guys its much appreciated.

Looks like ill line up a highline spec vr6 when the funds are looking a little more optimistic..

either that or tool up for the local bank to fund a RS6 lump and running gear.. ;)
