Hi All,
In your opinion which is best the 8v or the 16v mk2 ?
I've owned 4 8v's but never had a 16v and I'm now looking for a new one.
Cheers,

Hi,
"You pays your money you takes ya choice".
If you have had 4 8v's then maybe it is time for a change. I have had a 16v in the past and driven a mate's 8v a fair bit. The problem these days with the 16v is that you need to install one of those k-star box of tricks if you want to run on unleaded.
Personally, I would go for a very late model 8v with power steering and as many options as possible.

Thanks for the response jv...
I've only got about ?1200 to spend though, so a late 8v is out of the question I think.
-
not at all i bought my j plate 8v with power stering sunroof and all that for ?1200 and its mint you just got to look in the right places.
people keep saying that there isnt that much difference between the 8v and 16v anyway so what does it matter..
Cheers..........

Hi, I'm no expert but I am of the opinion that the 8v motor is the grunty torquey motor(good) and the 16v is a revvy motor with less grunt(not so good IMO) I would personally go for the models with no ps cl or electric anything (less to go wrong, old cars see ;)) but then i am from ancient aircooled stock so i havent gotten used to creature comforts yet.

Apparently the 8vs are more torquey at lower revs and then as the revs get higher, that is where the power picks up ;D. I got my '88 for ?1300 off of autotrader. Has power steering etc. Just look in several different places and ask around for any 'deals'.
Good luck.

power picks up on 16 valvers i meant to say. Hence the BIG GRIN!
-
just my two pennies:
For 1200 quid your likely to get a much nicer 8 valve...than 16v...although th 16v is a bit quicker...if your restricteed to that budget...your prob better off with a mint 8 v...just my opinion!!!
-
+ the insurance on the 16v will be quite a bit more

AJH i got me golf down in devon where i live quite lucky didnt have to go far but theres loads around so make sure that you look at several diferent examples dont buy the first you look at unless you no loads about golfs

why spend all that 1200 on a mint condition one? do what my brother has, and buy a not to bad condition one, then buy a scrapper thats modded, and strip the parts!
he got a whole car from a scrappie with Big bumpers, smooth tailgat, twin DTM exit (MAGNEX!!!), sports seats, induction kit- ?100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
look around!
honestly, i think 8v- 16v have got stupid insurance premiums!
:)
-
I'll vouch for that! Insurance will be bout a grand with 500 excess for my valver! Tis a bit of a joke! Oh well, it has to be done!

Can't believe your asking the question! :-)
16v wipes the 8v everytime. I don't remember a single 8v in the lifetime of my 16v ever getting close. And they tried, bless their little souls.
In my honest opinion the 8v drives more like a GL.
However, the 16v has one huge achillies heel.
Every single one (including mine) has been thrashed by its owner.

Quite right matey.... ;D
if your looking for decent quotes for insurance tesco are quite fair..... and some say axa are alright, but you'll have to phone!
-
I went for Adrian Flux. The best I had from anywhere. ?946 and ?300 xs with 2 years no claims. Still quite pricey but everywhere else had been quoting me over a grand.
