Title: Gti or Gt
Post by: Pintman on 05 August 2006, 16:55
Hi.

New to this site but want some advice.

I don't know whether to go for the Gti or the 1.4 GT Tsi?  I know both cars are similar apart from the engines and a few interior changes, but for 2K less, is the GT better?.  Also residual value?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers

pretend the GT doesnt exist mate. the 1.4TSI GT is an amazing engine but if you are looking for performance, u should really just shell out the extra 2k and get the GTI.

if your not that fussed about the performance, pay 16k and get the 1.4TSI sport.

im telling u the GT is great but its just too in between.

Cheers guys.

I think it was the finance guy at the VW showroom that made me think of the GT.  (think he has one as his demonstrator)

Measly gits though. Tried to get the best deal for my '54 plate 206 Gti and got a price at 6k that decreased £100 a month while waiting for the golf to built!!

We were told that our Mini was loosing £250 per month! I'm sure that they just make it up as they go along!

Of course they make it up, I saw the same when I had a Toyota Starlet SR in the past.  Admittedly not the sort of car that alot on here would choose, but book was quoting prices around £2500 when I came to sell because of the standard models.  However when I checked prices they were going for (and also taking into account mine was relatively low milage) I realised that was a load of rubbish.  I ended up selling the Starlet for £3300, I even had a couple of Toyota Engineers interested (one from down south, and one local who came and test drove).

However it also has to be said the prices of Mini's is fairly over the top at the minute, considering comparable cars.  Understandably they are a Premium brand but it would very unusual if their prices didn't come down at some point, what I'm sure most people would agree is they'd be happier if Book prices were reduced gradually, and with checks done on real world prices, rather than just either changing it one month by say a £1K, or deciding they'll PUSH prices down to something THEY reckon there worth but that nobody else agrees with.

Also since I've only recently bought my GTi I've been through this decision myself.  When I was looking at prices standard GT 1.4 TSI's were looking to be priced about only £1K less than a brand new standard 3Dr GTi (from an imported source of course), or a 8 month old UK 5Dr Gti.  I suspect since they'll lose value quicker than the Gti it just wouldn't make sense unless you were cash strapped or insurance was an issue.  Otherwise I suspect fuel costs can't be considered an important enough reason, if it were the Diesel GT would be a better bet.

It's a shame the Gt is so pricey!  It doesn't seem to have a massive spec or anything, and I'm sure more would be sold if it was cheaper...  The concept is fantastic, the price not so.........

I think that the Gt is aimed at the company car drivers and fleets - the co2 is lower and the discounts are there - VW dont give much away in discounts on GTis Im told but do on the GTs.

Ive got a new 170 gt tdi  and am well pleased with it (but would prefer a GTi!! but company wouldnt allow it )    it goes real well, in gear acceration is very good but first is nearly useless.  the 'W' button is interesting!

just looking for some 'TDi power'  stickers for it!  any ideas?

I would drive the Gt 168bhp petrol as it is a cracking car and has a lot more tourque and power than you would expect although it's right what people have said the gti would hold it's value better, however the gt can be discounted where as dealers will not discount the Gti.
Drive both so you get a feel for both cars. the Gt is a hell of a lot quicker than you would expect and in the real world is pretty much as quick as the Gti. I work for a vw dealership so get to drive them all on a regular basis.
+ you get a trick boost guage in the 170ps petrol.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I took the 168hp petrol Gt for a drive on Saturday and although I admit the engine was a nice, it didn't feel the same as the Gti that I drove.

The boost guage was a bit of fun though.  Backwards and forwards like a windscreen wiper!!. (thinks more of a gimmick than of any use).

Decided on the Gti but trying to find the spec I want of the 2nd hand market is nigh on impossible.  Ideally want the car now instead of waiting 4 months.  Watch this space!!.

What spec you want, I work for a large dealer, part of 4 vw sites so could be able to get you one, What spec you want, colour/ options etc and i'll find you one. Can arrange delivery of the car to you if not local.

Still looking into getting a new one as these prices are only 1-2k above a 1yr old Gti.
However, ideally something on or later than a 55 plate

Shadow blue/ black/ grey
Xenons
18" Monzas
Armrest
Sat nav (not essential)
Highline comp (not essential)

Looking to P/X my 206

Quite flexible in location.  Anywhere south of Nottingham is no problem.  Cheers!

Thanks for the advice about the Gti.

As from next Friday, I will be the owner of a Met black Gti wth dsg, 18" Monzas, xenons and leather interior.

Hadn't driven a golf with the dsg before and was blown away of how good it was, especially with the paddles. Can't wait
