for the entire duration of this tank of fuel I've been taking it really steady trying to get as many miles from her as possible. So as the trip was saying 360miles and the fuel gauge was almost at the bottom of the sweep I decided to give her some.
I forget how fast a reliatively standard mk2 8v really does go. She's flying! Even when flowing with the traffic at 70 and then planting 5th she doesn't hang about quickly gathering speed to overtake :D
Got freebie big bumpers and BBS RA's from a sportline to go on very soon. The wheels are on loan just to make the daily look a little more tidy.

I was fairly taken back at the speed of mine, swear it is quicker than the other one i had....and you get that lush exhaust noise
Now, if only my fuel gauge worked properly.....(i think i have got 220miles out of 1/2 a tank......)

Well driving mine for no less than 2 mins its such a difference from a heavy Mk4 1.4...
I put my foot half way down in any gear and it took off (my Mk4 does that) but you push it even further and I swear it pulls hard even after 4k! It really does get my heart racing and at the end of the day a GTi is meant to do that its meant to give you a rush driving it.
Working on it I cant wait till im driving it full time as all I think about atm is you couldnt have past me if I was in my GTi lol

i was low on money at the end of last month and couldnt rag it. I finally got paid on the thursday and took the car out. I put my footdown and my neck went back into the bucket seat. I love how much torque the GTIs have in the low end
-
Ragging it or not, just driving something with some history behind it puts a smile on my face
The other day some young bird in a 206 with Lexus lights shouted ' gorgeous ' out the window at me. She must of meant the car as i'm an ugly fekker !!!
The joys of a Mk2 !!

I have only just got hold of my golf gti mk2 8 valve beauty, and am impressed, i used to own a mr2, and a Celica GT4, and was expecting the golf to be slow............... but its not, its bloody amazing!! nippy, accelerates like a mad thing, picks up soo smoothly and mad a mockery of a BMW 325i..... was very happy       :smug:

Mine has been moving well since ive fitted 15's. Those chaventeens (17's) gave me a slower top end :undecided:
They do pull well in every gear but that doesnt last for long coz the top end sucks
-
ohh and a good 8v lump is a standard one.
-
I've had my Mk2 8v for a month now, very impressed with it. It feels more torquey than my Corrado VR6 low down in the rev range. Not as quick balls out obviously, but well up there. Bloody impressive for a 16 year old car, only 75k miles helps there though!
-
More torquey than a corrado vr6?
-
No offense ment here.
It always makes me smile when 8v owners big up their engines with the 'low down torque' line. Honestly now when you're really giving it all it's got do you spend most of the time in the lower rev range? I know I for one always have it 4k+ so really the multi-valve engines have the advantage?

I think they mean low in the gears....as in the first 3 gears. Not down in the rev range.

i get visions of all the 8v's having races round town like in the ali g film

You didn't read the response now did you. "When you're really giving it all its got," as you put it, low down torque doesn't come into it. Were not talking about giving it all its got, we're talking about torque at low to mid revs. You are confusing power with torque. I'm not saying my 8v is super quick, I'm saying it pulls very well at low revs and doesn't require three gear changes/redlining the engine in every gear to make decent progress. Overtaking seems very easy and that puts a smile on my face for one. My 8v is by far the least powerful car I've owned in the last 10 years yet it is not easily embarassed at all.
Audi100Quattro. Yes it honestly does feel more torquey than my Corrado VR6 low down, have you ever driven a VR6? I've had three of them in different guises and can asure you nothing much happens below 4k revs in a standard one....then all hell breaks loose! The VR6 may have much more torque but if you then bolt it to a car with 2 or 3 hundred kilos more of metal and give it cruising gear ratios......see what I mean.
-
Andy, i owned a golf vr6 for 4 years mate
And i can't agree really, but i will say that vr6 is much better with a k&n and a drilled box, makes a big difference to low down torque.

Aha I see :-) The VR6 low down torque can be much improved with induction mods......The only reason you'd do that is because out of the box they're a bit disappointing in that department. Adequate but not overwhelming or what you'd expect from a 2.8/9 V6 perhaps. Then you go past 4k revs big smile :smug: Anyway sorry if I wandered off topic a bit . They're all VWs and all good.

I've had my mk2 8v for about 7 months and every single time I finish a drive I feel better than when I started. Driving to work through london means you get lots of chances to overtake wazzocks in new beemers and its true, its not easily embarrassed
Its not the fastest car in the world I know that, and from a standing start or in lower revs its not amazing, but get to 4k rpm and... there's that smile again. They really are amazing cars. Mine's 15 years old with 140k on the clock... but its still feisty. I love the bassy exhaust noise you get when you've picked up speed, then take your foot off the gas  Also I always try to get a peak of the car's reflection in shop windows cos it looks so damn sexy... does anyone else do this? Its become a habit!
I've just upgraded the ice by installing an ipod adapter to my kenwood head unit. Was a hell of a job as i ended up removing half the dash to make it neat, but all back together and working a treat. Tunes make so much difference!!!
Increase the peace and keep it v dubbya

Theres an office accross the car park from my work. I used to regularly drive past it on the way out to see the reflection. Ive had to put an end to it now however after i almost drove into the side of another car

I cant believe all this sh!t about 8 or 16 valves, I've had both and if speed was my only concern I never would of bought either , I'd have bought something like this

Now thats what you want if you love bottom end bollox
-
nah, not my scene. I'll stick with mine cheers

I'm not suggesting we should all rush out and buy cars like this I'm just demonstrating the point that bottom end grunt and speed aren't the reason most of us buy GTI's, its the whole thing, the car as a package, the handling, the character, the classic shape, the history and the fact that our cars wear the badge that started it all
