Title: Aftermarket xenons
Post by: deva on 03 August 2006, 21:46
Hi,

Has anyone fitted aftermarket xenons to a GTI? Do they work without problems? Is it worth the hassle??

Thanks

Hi

If you fit 'em you will have two problems:

1. The aftermarket H7 bulb is too long and shorts out on the "VW" metal reflector in the headlamp and cause the balasts to blow prematurely.

2. The dash displays a fault on your headlamp bulbs - this can be overcome with the use of resistors but they get very hot.

The beam pattern is a little out of hugh.

You can fit them into the main beam and from fogs without problem 1.

Thanks for the response  I now think that it is not worth the trouble! My next VW will have standard xenons

You can buy OEM xenons on e-bay.de...

To make 'em plug and play you will also need this:

Doc,

If I buy the secondhand OEM R32 complete xenon headlamps from german ebay, do you know if they will fit without causing any problems?

Just got quoted £220 per headlight for the HID xenon headlamp for a Mk5 from a VW stealer, plus £114 for a bulb!  So £668 all in.

Cheers

Paul

Don't forget, if you have xenons fitted to your car it must also have headlight washers to be road legal and pass MOT.

"Don't forget, if you have xenons fitted to your car it must also have headlight washers to be road legal and pass MOT"

If this applies you would also need dynamic beam leveling.

BUT I think that all this only applies to manufacturers not if fitted aftermarket

Correct - you need a wiring convertor

See ebay items below:

german ebay guy told me he only sells LHD Xenons, not RHD, shame.

he also said you need automatic light level regulation for xenons to work.  is this standard on my '07 GTi, I've got the manual adjustment on dash.
