thinking about purchasing the above model, as i have seen one in the locals for 2100 quid 75000miles on a L plate
what should i be looking for? pros and cons please

Sounds very cheap for the mileage. Look out for the same things as with all golfs generally.
Worth a look but be vary!

yeah does sound very cheap for them miles!!!, make sure you do a hpi check on the carto make sure it aint a ringer or owt!!!, we had a 'k' plate vr6 3dr in a metallic dark blue round here with 95,000 on the clock at ?2695 and i thought that was cheap!!!, vr6 can tell you what to check for in more detail but be wary as he says as its rather cheap!! if all is good go grab an xmas bargin!!!! ;D ;D

There are loads about, some good , some not.
Don't buy unless 100% happy with it.

I was looking at corrado'slast summer and seem to remember hearing that the head gaskets had a tendancy to go. Also heard cambelt problems were not uncommen. '6 would know more about it than me. Maybe just the 2.9 liter engines that had problems sounds cheap though def go have a look. :)

my mate brought a VR6. 17''alloys, tints, DTm exhaust, Left hand drive converted to right hand drive. all for ?450!! bargain!
yep headgasket blew on him doing 150mph so he told me :o

The early headgaskets went at no.1 cylinder, the same has happened to mine. Only the geezer that repaired it did a sh!t job, luckily i caught it in time, and with several months gone no problems. Watch out for pressurised coolant ie. hard hoses and leaking expansion tank vent.
The Vr engines do not have a cambelt, they are chain driven at the gearbox end. 1 chain between crank and intermediate shafts, and 2 chains between the intermediate and cam shafts.
The chains should pretty much last for ever providing the oil has been changed regularly , so the chain is kept well lubed.
I wouldn't worry too much about the headgasket really, its probably not more likely to go than any other golf.
The 2.9 engine is exactly the same as the 2.8 but it is bored by 1mm.
Check my gallery for a few pics of when i did my headgasket. That narrow angle 6 is just sexy! :-*

I doubt you'd get a vr6 (even left hand drive) for 450 quid with 79k on it, is that what u meant?
Be careful the electronic milometers are even easier to clock than the old type.
Service history or some evidence of mileage is essential, unless you really know your stuff.

cheers guys great info...but just a couple of points is there a particular vr6 im looking for i.e highline is there any particular colour...what power does the 2.9 vr6 unit produce also when i go and have a look what areas should i keep an eye out for i.e rust etc etc electrics. also will i be able to tell if its modded or normal and if its not what mods can i do to it for faster performance

Head gaskets do fail, watch for oil leaks down the back of the engine and check the coolant is clean. There is no timing belt on the vr6 engines, have seen a few with top chains noisy, you will hear it :(, dont buy.
If the engine is clean , and quiet, it's prob OK.
Make sure the clutch, brakes, exhaust and tyres are also good cos thats also where the money goes ;).

The 2.9 unit is not fitted to golf as standard but to the corrado, it is 190bhp. The 2.8 unit produces 174bhp.
Rust shouldn't be a problem, but check around the doors, if rust is anywhere else then be wary as possible accident damage.
On the headgasket again, if the gasket sticks out from the block and is not flush, then it is a non vw gasket, so steer clear, probably been done by a muppet.

Well k+n induction kit is good place to start, much more responsive throttle, and it sounds like a tank.
Sports exhaust, cams, VSR intake manifold, chip, supercharger/turbo.
Depends how deep your pockets are.
The highline is nice, all leather , aircon etc. They are rumoured to have a better ecu as well, supposed to produce about 190bhp according to the Golf magazine, i think it was.
If you have a big enough budget, then i would suggest going for a later model ie 97 year, unless you don't mind doing some mechanical repairs yourself. Most importantly if you are going to do up an early model, make sure the bodywork is sound.

yaeh it was a drug dealers car apparently so it had been ragged out and then sold cheap to one of his mates. The ABS was nakkerd on a J plate also. ABS problems a common fault?
I remember him saying it was converted to a right hand drive as the fuse box and a few other things where catered for a left hand drive. Not too sure though.
