I am right in thinking that you do need a special tool to remove the exhaust manifold so that you can take the head off?

Depends what manifold is fitted, if you have the spring clips then yes.

I made a tool for removing those spring clips out of a piece of tube (or a socket), m10 bolt and nut and a washer. Run the nut up the bolt, fit the washer, put the threaded end of the bolt into the socket or tube, put the "tool" into the spring clip and wind the nut down, jacking the clip open with the head of the bolt and the btm of the socket  :). Bit hard to discribe, you will have to work out lengths of the bolt etc.
Steve.

ps, thought 8v gti golfs flange fitting on the dp ???.

I think you can use spring compressors in reverse.

I thought about trying my spring compressors but couldn't get them to work..........I rigged up something very similar to Steve.......mine was fiddley but it did work.
