Andy hi,

Not quit sure exactly where the noise is coming from the steering side of it. Does it make a knocking noise when you steer left and right when your at a standstill? if not have you cheeked the CV gaiters.

As I say I don't know if the noise is coming from the bottom or the top of the engine compartment !!
You know if it was a CV gaiter problem, it would sound like a marble rattling in a tin box when hard turning.
