Rite this is pretty sh1te. had my 16v for a week no probs, didn't take a mechanic when i bought it checked it myself as i know a bit about cars. since then 2 of my m8s who are mechanics and 1 who is an absolute golf nut have all said it seems sound and its a pukka car! drove to birmingham yesterday with the missus stayed the nite see tony hawks and mat hoffman at a show had a roast dinner and drove back. was inside for about an hour saying good by to the missus . went outside got in started reversing it off the drive and had very little revs and it cut out in the road. several attempts to start were futile and it ended up ova some old boys driveway. said old boy then comes out and has a go at me asking y i couldn't have broken down sumwhere else!!!!!!!!!!!! so i call a couple of pals round and get it pushed back on the drive.
have got spark from coil and petrol being pumped and she sounds like she wants to go but then just has a splutter and wont catch.
Is this a common fault does anyone know after a long journey? 170m approx. does she need time to cool down? oil temp was 92-98 and water 90, 36 mpg.
have heard that sum golfs suffer fuel starvation when hot is this true? any help well appreciated have got to go to work tom. do your best fellas

spark and petrol? ruff gues i would say timing.if it was an 8v i could have helped abit more.
-
timing you mean ignition timing rite? had thought about that but would it not of been running lumpy b4? and would it just suddenly be out?
-
You've got a spark from the coil, but have you got a spark from the dizzy as well?
-
The coils on mk3s are prone to failure, perhaps the spark isn't strong enough?
-
grab hold of it and get ya mate to turn her over on the key!lol
-
no work for me this morning then the good old pretend nothing is wrong and itl work in the morning failed.
Ok have got spark in all cylinders the sparks all looked the same strength which to me looked pretty strong.
so def have spark and petrol so wot next presume timing is out ignition or cam and how do i tell any ideas anyone.

take the cam belt cover off and check the belt hasn't snapped, then check the condition of it. If you look at the digifant tuning guide in the mk2 maintenance + info section it tells you how to check the timing. Its not quite the same as on a MK2 8v, just ignore the dizzy timing bit :)
-
sweet rub. that was my next point of call the cam belt but handily enuff it just started raining and the engine has a handy plastic cover underneath thats proving a pain to get off. the cam had just been done in last service so shouldnt of snapped (i hope) if it is loose is it possible its jumped a tooth
-
cool, it should twist about 90 degrees in the middle at the front :)
-
Ok so managed to get to the cam belt dismantling various bits and pieces and cam belt is in 1 piece and twist no more than 90 degrees. what do u reakon next

like rubjonny said you need to make sure youre defo getting fuel and that the spark you are getting is a strong spark?does the engine turn over ok?see if you can get your hands on a compression tester gunsons make one and its very good theyre about 17 quid i think and see how much pressure each pot is giving you?
