Title: My Temperature gauge sits at 90c and never moves
Post by: Cheeky Monkey on 27 July 2006, 07:58
Can anyone please advise,

I own a VW Golf GIT 2.0 MK4 and have noticed that ever since I have own it (4 months) after 5 minutes startup the engine temperature sits at 90c and never moves there after until switch off.

When the car has been running in hot temperatures and cold, it never moves of the 90c spot.
Is this common on Golfs or is the thermostat stuck or switch stuck?

Can anyone let me know whats theirs does please.

Kind regards
Danny

Rhyso,

Do you have a MK4 that does the same.

I never hear the fans cut in, yet its never over heated. Even in the cold it never sits anywhere but 90c all the time.

Cheers
Danny

got a TDI 130 mate.

As far as I'm aware 90c is the norm.  My dad's two golfs both sat at 90c whatever the weather and he had both cars from new.  other MK4's that I have driven do the same too

Cheers Rhyso,

Thanks for the help, I won't go out and order a thermostat and swith then yet the radiator is going to be renewed today as it got a tiny leak. Might as well get it done under warranty as im off to the isle of wight next month and dont fancy the idea of sitting on the hard shoulder with a blown rad LOL.

Thanks for your help and have a cool day mate

Cheers Dan

Mine does the same only 2-3 mins and stays at 90c for the rest of the journey, If you want to check your fans work park with the bonnet facing the wall and give it some revs for a while as there is no breeze hitting the rad so the fans should cut in.

I haven't been on track in the Golf, yet, but I've given it some serious stick on the roads, & it never so much as flickers over the 90 mark!!

German engineering for you!

I remember easing off at Oulton Park in the GTi-6 when the temp guage was touching 125!!!

Ditto to all the above for me too, but I believe that this is because the gauge doesnt' actually report the exact temperature, it is moderated by electronic shenanigans to report too cold, normal or too hot.  Ie if the temp rises in trafic, as long as the fan kicks in and takes the temp back down withing a reasonable time frame the electronics will say all is fine and instruct the gauge to sit at 90.  If the fans don't kick in and the temp doesn't fall in this time frame or the ecu reports that the fans are in/op then the gauge will start reading hot to warn you.

So I've been told.

My folks used to have a 'cough' vx cavalier and this would just sit at 45C all the time, was normal for this car apparantly.
