Title: 78 GTI VIN

Hi, I'm from OZ. Over here early GTI's are as rare as hens teeth. I managed to pick up a '78 german import in 1986 but i'm chasing up a 2nd one for my daughter. Does anybody know a good site on how to decode the early VIN plate. Every where i've looked relates to 1983 and later. Did the early GTI's have a body number unique to the GTI? I want to ensure i get something genuine.

No good. The vin plate in Australia is unique i think, the only car identification on the plate not relating to aust design rules is the body # and another plate with  095-1005   gc  2  0.
The body # is 178 3 366 465. As i have said early GTI's are rare here and were never sold out here. All are private imports. Information is hard to come by locally.
