Title: GTI MK 3 WONT START

my golf gti wont start there is a ticking noise coming from the left hand side in the engine bay that seams to be a small black unit situated just UNDER the suspension turret the car is turning over but not firing any one got any ideas the unit is about 10cm in size and made of plastic WITH A SMALL PLASTIC DI SC AT THE BOTTOM AND GAS AN INLET PIPE AND AN OUT LET PIPE ??????????????????????

i know u posted this a while ago but im curious if you found the problem.u most defo have done by now.

i take it it was the earth cable from the battery to the gearbox?
i had the same prob and this is what it was
