love it! my first gti!, got it for a song too, though had lots of cleaning to do and it needs a bit of work, but not much.
i dare say i can learn a lot from you guys....
anyway, its a 1.6, 1981. Im guessing 8 valve (no, im not a mechanic!). What performance should i expect? its quite quick now, but its idling at 500rpm, so should i expect much more after the tune up and BIG service on Friday?
..anyway..

Hey them whitewalls looked the mutts! (they were a rubber trim over the tyre, cost about £60 i think.!).
I wouldnt use them again though as they wear your tyre walls out rapidly.

Hiya, welcome to the forum

hello and welcome
yea the mark 1's are 8 valve. If its idling a bit low then turn the idle screw up a bit so it sits nicely at about 850-900 ish!. They should have 110bhp so best way to find out is to take it to a rolling road and get it set up properly.
p.s. nice looking mark 1's, both look really tidy!

Cheers for the info Neaty! You can be my new best friend on here! as for those others, how can you diss my whitewalls? They looked the the dogs! I smell jealousy

I like the whitewalls, add a bit of nostalgia to it, plus the car is white so works well.
