when my car hit between 2000 to 2200 revs there was a really tinny rattle, the chap at the garage checked the timing belt which was ok, was gonna go back and get the engine opend up to hopefully find out the problem and get it fixed as it was gettin well loud
then yesterday went over some rail lines at bout 60, the road dropped away a little at the other side as did my car too! a split second after landing there was a really loud crack that i also felt too, under my seat. looked behind expecting to see some bits off car rolling on the road but nothing and also the bad rattle has gone
just thought i'd share the happy story, long live the MK2, the best golf ever?? probably

lets just hope it wasnt important whatever fell off ey

It's not the manifold heatshield that's come off is it? it's only hooked onto the rain gutter and they fall apart the bump might have just sealed the deal!
-
maybe when you werent looking R2-D2 had a fettle with his trusty snap on ratchet and sorted it out!
-
Def sounds like heatshield to me.
-
Wish mine did that...if my car rattled i just turned the music up
-
thats what i do when my oil light and buzzer comes on, position my hand so i cant see if flashing and turn the stereo up so i cant hear it, problem solved!

it wasn't your engine that fell out was it thats why the noise has stopped
