Title: Help Please....Steering Column ??
Post by: DubUpYork on 14 July 2006, 09:06
hey. i was rudly awoken this morning by a family member needing me to move my car so they can get there's out. as tired as i was i gave the keys to my mum to move the car for me which she has done a few times before (even tho i hate the thought of her driving it) bu thtis morning she shouted upstairs that she cant start the car. so i went and had a go and she wasnt joking. the steering lock seems to have jammed or something...can only move the steering wheel about an inch or so and the key will not turn to unlock it. really need the car today so if anyone has any ideas or could give some guidence on what i could do that would be great. cheers

I'd keep wiggling the key & wheel, do you have a spare key?  Move the key up & down, side to side etc.  Dont force anything too hard thouhg as you dont want to snap the key in the lock!!

If all that fails then this may sound a bit drastic, but remove the whole column and swap with another from a MK2 of the same age.  Looking at your sig its a 90 spec right?  So you'll need a 90 spec column from another car from your local scrappy.  Try to get one with a key if you can, it will make your life easier in the short term and you can swap the lock barrels over later:

1. Take out all the ignition shroud trim & the dash undertrays
2. Remove wheel & stalks
3. Undo large bult holding the ign shroud to the column
4. Undo & remove the nut & bolt holding the column to the universal joint at the bottom
5. The column should come out complete with the ignition switch housing
6. Now you can remove the ignition switch, which may need replacing (may as well anyway while its all out!)
7. To get the barrel out you need to drill a 3mm hole in a specific place, and press a locking tab in:

mine gets a bit like that tom,... generally walkin away n comin back works..

i think mine is just temperamental tho... you have tried wigglin steering wheel both ways? i had an immobiliser which stopped that, and a wire was a bit dodgy.. there was a switch behnd love box tho that disarmed it!

hope u get sorted!!! :)

The lock is in the top of the housing unfortunatlky, so a bugger to get to!
Have you not got a spare key you can try, perhaps your main key has worn down a bit?

Keep trying the key, and try to kinda move the whole key up & down the barrel if you get me?

It does sound like you're going to have to take the column out!
