Title: Starting problems
Post by: HuwMk2 on 13 July 2006, 10:22
New starter motor fitted on Tuesday but Monday but the car doesn't start on the first turn of the key. Takes 4-5 attempts before it starts. What 's the problem???

Car is a 1991 golf gti 8v.

What happens when you 1st turn the key. Does it click?

Its most likeley to be the power and earth wires to the starter moter. Make sure they are all connected (especially the earth from battery to gearbox) and clean up all the contacts.

I had this, and it turned out to be a dodgy blue temp sender, buy a new one from VW, will cost ya £13.  Even if it dont fix it, at least you know for sure the ECU is fueling the engine with optimum efficiency :)

Dont bother with pattern GSF ones, they're rubbish.

yes mate, mine was exactly the same, turn the key and it takes several tries to fire up.   I also had another similar situation which was a problem with the gearbox earth, but more often than not it would click and everything would die!  But you've mentioned that ;)

I'm reading it to mean the engine is turning over but not firing?

I remeber when mine had issues starting , the rev and speedo needle would shoot around all over the shop when the key was turned to the 1st click position, I think thats the general sign of earth gone.

I did call the AA chap out, who kindly put a new earth strap in for me, and replaced the live lead to the starter aswell
