Title: Car stoped and now wont start!, please help
Post by: layerz on 11 July 2006, 20:10
Hi guys,

My gf's car is a 1.6 golf mk 2 89 plate.

The car cut out earlier after starting and being very slugish and would not restart.
When it cut out there was alot of smoke and then would not turn over.

We have bump started it and it was fine then, so the engine is ok.

The starter motor wire that comes from the solenoid is chared/burnt but still conected and not sure if just a new starter
will sort it. We think the start siezed as it may of burnt out.

I have also read that it could be earth straps, but the smopke suggests otherwise.

Please help with some input as I have taken tomorrow off to fix it for her.

I think the starter solonoid may have stuck out, and has burned out the starter & wiring.  I'd start by replacing all the battery, alternator & starter wiring, either with stuff pinched from a late GTI, or from a 92-94 Passat (one with a grill)
Also pinch a starter off a GTI as well, as I wouldn't trust the one you have on there right now!

Got a new starter for 20 quid from a derv and it starts fine.

Only problem is I had to jack the engine up to get the bolts to line up, but one doesent 100% line up, it is about 10mm out.   I have wd40'd it and hopefully running the eng ine should losen it, it is still in solidly with one top and one bottom bolt.

Need to get some cheap wiring then just in case.

What can make the solenoid go just age?

Why did you have to jack the engine up?

Is the new starter the same size as the old one?

Because the starter bolts to the front engine mount bracket, so you have to jack up the engine to get all the bolts in.

Yes age and general wear and tear.
